tried to enjoy my nest hub, gave up after 6 months

About 6 months ago, I bought a nest hub with the hopes of using it for home automation, as an alarm clock, and for sundry things like phone calls, assistant, calendar appointments, whatever. I've bought mostly nexus and pixel phones for the last 10ish years, so my expectations were a stripped-down, functional device with reasonable customizability and very little interface/crapware.

I tried to give it a chance but in the end, I'm disappointed. There are almost no controls for the device's interface or behavior. It shows me ads for crappy clicker games every time I walk into the room, despite the fact that I don't do any mobile gaming. None of the functionality works when there's an interruption of connectivity. I can't control any of the cards that appear on the screens, and I can't control which screens I see.

Overall, I would compare the user experience to that of a cheap, ad-subsidized amazon tablet, and I'm left feeling like I paid money for a bottom-barrel device with no customizability that's intended as a vehicle for ads and play store impulse buys. For google's sake, I hope this isn't the intended UX for the future of google hardware, because my first impression of fuchsia is "amazon fire but worse".

Hey roro-fairy,

Sorry to hear about your experience with your Google Nest Hub. We'd love to help. A few questions: when did the issue start? How many accounts are linked on the Google Home app? Could you list down all the smart devices connected to your Nest Hub? Are you able to control your smart devices from the native and Google Home app? Also, could you share a video showing the issue so we can have a better picture on what's happening to your Nest display?

Please note that the Nest Hub and smart devices use the internet to work properly and communicate with each other. If there's something wrong with your network connection, the devices will not function properly.

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,
Muddi

Hi Muddi,

Is there a way to remove the cards & screens with app/game advertisements & recommendations? Or at least prevent the device from cycling through screens that I don't use? Can I make a screen that just has home automation devices and maybe my calendar and that's it?

Hi roro-fairy,

Currently, there's no option to customize the cards that you can see on the Nest Hub. We're always looking for ways to improve -- we'll take this as feedback, and we'll gladly pass it along to the team. You can also send feedback using your device by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback." Visit this link for more steps.

Cheers,

Muddi
