Allow Apps From Unknown Sources

Hi,

I am having issues downloading apps from untrusted sources. I have been able to do this previously on my Chromecast but am not able to anymore.

I have gone through the steps to make myself a developer but that does still not solve the issue.

I have followed the instructions on here to go to settings  > apps > security but the only two options that show are 'scan apps with play protect' or 'improve harmful app detection'.

There is no longer an option to allow apps from untrusted sources, which is odd as I have done this on all previous devices and can confirm I am in Develop mode.

I have performed a factory reset to see if that solved the issue but I am afraid it hasn't.

I have also tried settings > privacy > security but that route does not work either.

Any help here would be appreciated.

Thank you .

Hi Burke1_,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. During the early period when it was released, the Chromecast with Google TV had the feature of sideloading apps. Now, I can’t see that on my own device either. Let me check with the support team for further details. I’ll get back to you on this.

Sincerely,

Kimy

Hi there,

I’m sorry if it took a while for my reply. I needed to confirm things with the support team and do some trial and error on my end. The option to do it from the Google TV settings is not available, but the feature still seems to be there. That option pops up when installing the actual app. The question here now is how to get the app. I personally did it by installing a file manager app (ES File Explorer, FX File Explorer, X-plore File Manager, etc.), which let me login to my Google Drive (or other cloud storage) and install the saved apps from there. The key here is if you can figure out a way to bring in the app from whatever source. We don’t normally suggest it, though. Let me know if you still have questions.

Cheers,

Kimy
