Audio Distortion

Bergskey
Community Member

Equipment: newer Sony TV, chromecast with googletv just bought NOT 4k, and a very old bose lifestyle 38 surround sound system.

Chromecast is plugged into HDMI port, optical audio cable goes from the TV to bose receiver.

We got everything hooked up and had audio but there was no surround sound, it was pretty flat. So we went into options and only Dolby digital was activated. So we turned on all the other formats even though it claimed they weren't supported. Tossed on Marvel movie on Disney+ and it sounded fantastic. Hopped over to VUDU and attempted to play a HDX movie and there was no voice audio and super distorted other audio that sounded like slowmo and underwater. The receiver said the audio output was pcm 2.0.

We checked other apps. Disney+, Prime Video, peacock, and MAX come through with perfect audio showing either Dolby 5.1 or Dolby 2.0.

Hulu, vudu, and history Channel apps show pcm 2.0 with the weird audio. All of the menus show pcm 2.0 with no audio "click" as you scroll even though that setting is turned on.

We tried changing out which of the audio options are turned on and different combinations and that didn't seem to work. The receiver doesn't have HDMI outputs to change from optical. Could it possibly be a bad optical cable? Pretty sure the one my dad has is 10+ years old. The only reason we didn't try to switch it is my parents didn't have another one and it would require moving a 100lb entertainment center. Are there specific audio options we may not have tried? Any help or things to try would I would be so grateful for.

Hi @Bergskey,

Thanks for reaching out. to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with sound when attempting to play certain movies on various platforms. No worries, I'm here to help.

Based on your description, it seems like there might be a compatibility issue between the audio format used by some apps and your surround sound system. Here are a couple of things you can try:

  • Adjust App Audio Settings: Check the settings menu within the Hulu and Vudu apps specifically. Look for options related to audio output or Dolby settings. Try setting them to "Auto" or a format like Dolby Digital that your Bose system can decode.
  • Consult App Support Websites: The Hulu and Vudu websites might have troubleshooting guides or information about audio compatibility issues with Chromecast devices.

Please let me know if you have any questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Sincerely,

Jonathan

Neither of those apps have audio setting options to control what they put the audio out with.

Hi @Bergskey,

Thanks for your reply.

That's a great point about some apps offering audio configuration options. To help troubleshoot the audio issues with specific apps, here are some suggestions:

Check App Support Websites: Both Hulu and Vudu likely have support sections on their websites that might address audio compatibility issues with Chromecast devices. You can search their websites or contact their technical support for more information.

Feel free to reply to this post for further assistance.

Regards,

Jonathan
