Better Family Control - Unified Usage API

I am writing to express my frustration with the fragmented state of parental controls within the Google ecosystem. As a tech-literate parent, I find it unacceptable that usage data is not aggregated across devices, even within the same household. Currently, a child can hit a time limit on one Google TV Streamer and simply move to another in the next room—or an iPad—with a completely fresh clock. YouTube for TV, YouTube Mobile and Google tv streamer vs Google TV built in is a prime example.
In an era of unified APIs, having to manually configure time limits on a "per-device" basis is archaic. Google clearly possesses the data and resources to build a cohesive, responsible ecosystem, yet the current implementation feels like a collection of siloed products rather than a unified platform.
While tools are not a substitute for active parenting, a corporation of Google's scale has a responsibility to provide the infrastructure that makes responsible parenting feasible. By failing to provide streamlined, cross-platform tools, you are placing an undue burden on families. I urge Google to return to its "Do No Evil" roots and prioritize family well-being over fragmented monetization.

Specific Feature Requests:

  1. Unified Usage API: Implement a back-end that aggregates "screen time" at the account level, regardless of the hardware or OS (Google TV, iPadOS, Android).
  2. Centralized Time Limits: Manage all device and app limits via a single interface in Family Link, enforced globally across the account.
  3. App-Level Restrictions on Google TV: Bridge the gap between mobile and TV platforms. Currently, app-specific limits are non-functional on flagship products like the Google TV Streamer. This needs immediate parity with the Android mobile experience.
  4. Enhanced Content Reporting: Provide detailed logs of specific content consumed across all surfaces in a single "Activity Feed."
  5. Real-Time Requests: Enable the "Request More Time" feature on Google TV, with push notifications sent directly to the parent’s Family Link app for approval.
Note to Developers: If Google is unwilling to prioritize these features, I urge you to release a Public API for Family Link. As a developer, I—and many in the Home Assistant community—would gladly build these integrations ourselves to ensure our homes remain safe and balanced for our children.

Sincerely,
A Google fan but concerned parent

I agree with every word. I have more controls on Amazon and Microsoft/Xbox. Google is not family oriented, which is a low bar in my expectations of applications.

Hi there,

Thanks for posting in the community. I understand your perspective on the parental control ecosystem. It’s clear that as a tech-literate parent, you expect a level of cross-device cohesion that our current implementation isn't meeting, and I can imagine how frustrating that must be. No worries, help is here!

While we don't support the Family Link parental control service, we recommend reaching out to the Family Link Help Center to ensure you receive the most effective assistance. They have the expertise to troubleshoot and resolve these concerns. You can find more information on their official website: Contact Google about Family Link.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Melany

Thank you for your response. While I have already shared this feedback with the YouTube and Family Link teams, I want to emphasize that this is not merely a hardware limitation of the Google TV Streamer—it is a systemic failure caused by siloed teams.

Currently, Family Link, Google TV, and YouTube operate as independent islands. To truly prioritize the health and safety of children, these teams must collaborate on a unified framework. Device groups, application teams, and content platforms should not be working in isolation; they should be building a shared foundation that supports the modern family.

As the "home" arm of Google, Nest should be leading this charge. I urge the Nest leadership to advocate for their customers by pressuring peers in Family Link and YouTube to do the right thing. Nest has a storied history of innovation—it’s time to be the team that turns heads again by proving that the family unit is your top priority.

I challenge Nest to drive this cultural and technical change within Google. It is time to move past fragmented products and deliver a cohesive, responsible ecosystem. I know this team builds great products—I have over 30 of them in my home—and that is why I expect more.

Melany, please "phone a friend," create a user story, or escalate this to an executive. Push the envelope. Do it for our children’s future. Let’s create a world where we balance digital engagement with real-world play, rather than raising a generation of "YouTube zombies." Let’s see these features integrated and announced at the next Google I/O.

Thank you,

A Google/Nest Super-User and Concerned Parent
