Can a Chromecast work in Ethernet with PLC?

SvenDenns

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new here and just bought a Chromecast 4K to easily cast my computer and phone to my Samsung QE55Q67R.

I also bought the Ethernet adapter for Chromecast, hoping to use it with Devolo Magic 2 LAN Triple PLC. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to get the Chromecast to work with the PLC adapter. I thought I did something wrong, but couldn't find what.

So I tried with the simple power cable bundled with the Chromecast and everything worked perfectly.

I've read on some articles that the Ethernet adapter just worked with internet routers and not PLC. Is this right? Could someone please confirm this information?

I'm looking forwards to your answers. Have a great day

Did you connect it as per the diagram below? The difference for you would be you're inserting a powerline adapter in-between the plug and your router (the cable that is labelled 3 on the diagram).

Plug > Ethernet cable > Powerline adapter > Powerline adapter > Ethernet cable > Router

Hi @David_K . Thanks for your answer.

Yes, it seems I did it similarly:

  • Chromecast plugged with the powerline adapter to a power strip (plugged into a UPS)
  • The powerline adapter is connected with an Ethernet cable to the PLC (which is plugged alone in the wall socket)

All the other items plugged into the PLC are perfectly working (TV, Xbox)

Not sure I understand. The link you provided is a powerline adapter?

Usually it's connected like this:

  • Chromecast ethernet adapter > Ethernet cable > Router

Yours should look like this:

  • Chromecast ethernet adapter > Ethernet cable > Powerline adapter (at one end) > Powerline adapter (at the other end) > Ethernet cable > Router

If it definitely is connected like that perhaps set it up using Wifi first, then change to using the ethernet adapter as I have seen that help some users.

Hi @David_K, thanks again for your message. I'm sorry mine wasn't perfectly clear.

My Chromecast was connected this way: Chromecast Ethernet adapter > Ethernet cable > Powerline adapter (at one end) > Powerline adapter (at the other end) > Ethernet cable > Router

The Chromecast is electrically plugged into a powerline adapter, which is itself plugged into a UPS (so no electrical failure can happen).

I unfortunately already tried to plug it back in Ethernet with PLC after it was successfully connected to Wi-Fi, but it didn't work.

In that case, let's rule something out. Temporarily connect it exactly as per the diagram and don't use the powerline adapters. Does that work?

Hi @David_K, and thanks again for your help

For now, I don't use the powerline adapter. The ChromeCast is connected with the default power cable. So there's no Ethernet and only Wi-Fi. It works well this way. Maybe I should stay with it?

If it's working okay with good speed then you're good!

Thank you, @David_K. It seemed to work well this way, so I don't want to move a thing. Chromecast seems capricious 😅.

I had preferred connecting by Ethernet, but if it's complicated I'll go this way.

Hi @jamespride815 and thank you for your answer.

I've tried to troubleshoot it an entire afternoon. Maybe the PLC doesn't provide something enough that the router would? The LED on the Chromecast was barely lit with the Chromecast Ethernet adapter, and when I used the bundled power cable it was bright white.

Wish you a wonderful day too!

FYI I marked the reply you replied to as spam, it was almost certainly an AI bot link spamming.

Hi @David_K. Thank you for your message. You mean it was an AI bot that generated that message? I wasn't aware of such things, I thought it was a real person.
