The CCA does not appear in the list of devices when I click on the cast icon in the browser menu. My television and Now TV box do appear though.
The CCA is on the same WiFi network as the laptop.
The CCA works fine from my Android phone.
The network is Private and network discovery is switched on.

I seem to have fixed the problem by changing the Streaming settings in Windows Media Player of all things. How that impact on Chrome Browser is beyond me, but I have seen that suggested in various Google searches of the problem.

These connection issues can be pretty tricky to deal with, so I'd be happy to help you figure this out. What operating system are you using on your laptop? Regardless, I would make sure your Google Chrome is up-to-date, and if the problem persists, go ahead and try casting from Google Canary to narrow down the potential problem.

I'm glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue! Windows settings in general can be a bit finicky when it comes to casting in my experience, but that is a pretty strange solution.
