Can't turn off Google TV streamer remotely in Google Home

FlipperHubba
Community Member

With my Chromecast with Google TV's I have always been able to turn them on and off remotely (not on same Wifi) with my Google home App, the button for them even says on or off on it. The New Google TV streamer does not have the on or off option or text when I am not on the network. Is this a flaw with setup, or an issue with the new hardware and Google home?

Hello @FlipperHubba

Thanks for reaching out to our Nest Community. Apologize for all the inconveniences controlling your Google TV. Don't worry; help here.

I completely understand your situation. Let me ask you if you set up your device to perform this action.

To do that, you can follow the next steps on your Google TV:

  • Go to All Settings
  • Remotes & Accessories
  • Set up remote buttons.
  • Select the relevant device to troubleshoot. For example, Sony TV and then Set up buttons and then Reconfigure the controls for Volume, Power, or Input.

If the device isn’t listed, Go to:

  • Set up remote buttons.
  • Select Add device and configure the device.

After these steps, you can control your Google TV normally.

Feel free to keep us posting if you have more questions; I'm happy to help you out.

Best regards,
Douglas.

Not even close to my question or problem the remote control works fine. I can not turn it off or on via Google home when I am out of the house like I can do with my prior version chromecast

Hi FlipperHubba,

Thanks for posting. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, but don't worry; help is here. Regarding your questions on the post above, before any diagnosis, please try with this information, and if it doesn't work, we will be glad to further assist and investigate. In this case, you can try to reboot the Google TV Streamer, and please, after that, make sure that your devices are connected. Both your Google TV Streamer and your Google Home device should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

How to restart your streaming device: Unplug the power cable, wait for 3 seconds, and then plug it back in.

After the restart, tap on your Google TV streamer to access its controls.

From there, you can:

  • Turn it on or off: Simply tap the power button.
  • Use the virtual remote: The app provides a virtual remote control that you can use to navigate your Google TV Streamer's interface.
  • Cast content: You can cast content from your phone or tablet to your Google TV streamer using the app's casting feature.

You can check the "Pair your virtual remote" article for more information.

Please let me know how it goes or if you have more questions. I'll be happy to help.

Best regards,

Jenny

None of the provided answers are relevant. This is about being outside the Streamers network, and being able to turn the device on or off via Google Home App. I can do this easily with Chromecast With Google TV, but on and off toggle does not exist in Google Home for The Google TV Streamer.

I have the same question as the original poster (and got equally frustrated with the answers not answering the real question). Did this get resolved?
