Cause of Chromecast Resolution Fixed at 720p

I have a monitor that supports 1080P and a Google Chromecast with Google TV 4K .

1. My monitor does not allow manual setting of resolution. Automatically sets the maximum resolution based on the connected source.

2. The monitor supports 1080P. When using Chromecast 2nd generation and other source devices, it outputs 1080P.

3. When I connect Chromecast with Google TV 4K  to the monitor and turn it on, the monitor operates at 1920x1080 60hzfh while the Google G logo is displayed.

Next, from the moment the Google TV logo is displayed, the monitor is fixed at 1280*720 60hz.

4. The display resolution settings only show 720P, so I can't change the resolution after booting.

Many people who use portable monitors that automatically adjust their resolution have the same problem as me.

Googlecast displays 720P during the initialization stage, and the monitor recognizes 720P. Next, Google Cast seems to recognize that the monitor only provides 720P. My monitor can actually offer higher resolutions, but there's no way to change it to 1080P.

I am also facing exactly the same issue with my LeEco TV. If I choose HDMI EDID 2.0 then it won't even show the resolution option in the settings, but with EDID 1.3, it shows the resolution option so that I can change it. But with EDID 1.3 PrimeVideo app won't work.

This started happening with recent update (Oct Patch) for Chromecast with Google TV 4K

The same thing happens to me. I even made a factory redefinition and did not solve. My TV is old and does not accept these automatic settings very well. Does anyone have any solution?

Just to leave feedback, there was a drop in light here at home and by chance the option appeared again. I even turned off and call from the outlet and not resolved before. I think the problem was on TV that was somehow hindering and the only thing that had not been done yet. Now everything is normal and I can choose the resolution at Chromecast Wit Google TV.

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. The Chromecast with Google TV only determines the options for resolution based on what the TV feeds to it via HDMI communication. If you’re using a smart TV, I suggest that you update its firmware. You can also refresh the communication between these devices by performing a sequential reboot (TV and Chromecast device). If it persists, you do a full clean-up by performing a factory reset and setting it up from scratch. Hopefully, this helps.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Kimy

I've already tried every method you've said.

The only way to display 1080p was to use another brand of tvstick that could manually set the resolution without using chromecast

Hi BJ3,

Thanks for the reply. I suggest you try it on another display (TV, monitor, projector, etc.) that is capable of higher resolution. The objective is to identify if the handover of the resolution specs that the display device feeds the Chromecast device is being read correctly via HDMI communication. If the higher resolution display was read properly, it means there's nothing wrong with the reading capability of the Chromecast device; then that means the current display device can’t convince the Chromecast that it’s capable of displaying such a resolution. Let us know how it goes.

We look forward to your response.

When I connect my Chromecast to another monitor, it works at 1080p.

Also, it works at 1080p even when I connect another tv stick to my monitor.

(The problem is that both the monitor and Chromecast do not support manual resolution.)

The Chromecast shows 720p when booting up, so the monitor recognizes it as 720p from Chromecast and operates at 720p. Then, Chromecast hides other resolution options after booting up.

To make Chromecast available on monitors that automatically determine the resolution, Google needs to provide a software update for the program to enable Chromecast to set manual resolution.

Hello BJ3,

Thanks for the details. Since your Chromecast device managed to correctly identify that the other monitor is capable of a higher resolution, it means there’s nothing wrong with it. The Chromecast device will automatically accept what the display device’s resolution specs feed it. Then you can manually change it via Settings > Display and Sound > Resolution. From here, choices such as 480p - 60Hz, 576p - 50Hz, 720p - 50Hz, 720p - 60Hz, 1080p - 24Hz, 1080p - 50Hz, 1080p - 60Hz, 4K - 24Hz, 4K - 25Hz, 4K - 30Hz, etc. are available as choices depending on your display capabilities.

Kindly share here a short video of you navigating through Settings > Display and Sound > Resolution, and show us the part where it doesn’t show any choices at all. We look forward to your response.

Best,

Kimy

Hi BJ3,

Thanks for sharing this short video. Based on the video, it seems that the display limits the option to 720p - 60Hz. There is no option to choose higher or lower resolution. There’s no way to force it on the Chromecast device, especially if that is the only option given by the display for the Chromecast to choose from. You can try it on another display or an actual TV to see and compare. There will be an option depending on what the display feeds back to the Chromecast device. I hope this gives clarity to the situation. Let us know if you have other concerns.

Thanks,

Kimy
