Chromecast Flickers Black and Dolby Vision Appears

Echo5Giraffe

While watching TV using Google Chromecast the screen goes black and whichever dynamic range format is selected (Dolby Vision, HDR, SDR) displays on the top right of the screen. It happens about 6 times while watching a 2 hour movie, but happens almost every time I switch apps, and happens frequently while I'm in the Chromecast settings menu.

TV Brand: LG

Model: 65UH8500-UA

Google Chromecast with Google TV HDMI

Model: GZRNL

Steps already attempted:

- UNPLUGGING and resetting TV and Chromecast

- Changing HDMI ports

- Changing Chromecast power outlets from power strip to direct wall outlet

- Changed dynamic range format

- Changed resolution

Any advice on this before I try a factory reset of the Chromecast?

Hi Echo5Giraffe,

Thanks for posting in the community.

I'm sorry to hear that your Google Chromecast 4K (model GZRNL) is displaying a black screen while you are watching TV. I appreciate you mentioning that this behavior persists even after changing the dynamic range format (Dolby Vision, HDR, SDR). Additionally, I understand that you are experiencing it frequently when switching apps or navigating the Chromecast settings menu.

The detailed information you've provided is very helpful in understanding the situation. Before we consider a factory reset, I'd appreciate it if you could observe the LED light status on the Chromecast device when the black screen appears and when it's streaming normally. Please let me know of any differences you notice.

I also recommend trying a different power cable and checking if it helps the Chromecast to work properly.

Thanks for your kind attention. I will be looking forward to your answer.

Regards,

Virna

Hi,

The light on the chromecast is white. When the flickering happens, the light remains white. There is no change.

I tried different power cables, and there is no change.

What's the next step?

Hi Echo5Giraffe,

I understand your frustration with the Chromecast not working even after troubleshooting. I apologize for the inconvenience you're experiencing. As the last resort, we recommend you to reset your device, please make sure that the reset is completed as established based on the How to factory reset your Chromecast guide.

With the Chromecast Voice Remote:

  1. On the top right of your TV screen, select your profile and then Settings.
  2. Select System and then About and then Factory Reset.

From the Chromecast device:

  1. While the Chromecast is plugged into the TV and powered, press and hold the button on the back of the Chromecast. The LED should start to blink yellow.
  2. When the LED light turns solid white, release the button, and the Chromecast should then reset.

You can also check the following article to Set up Chromecast with Google TV and Voice Remote in case it is needed.

Please keep me posted.

Best,

Mario
