Chromecast Google TV 4K unexpected Oct 2023 patch wifi issues

Kikifatcat

Today I randomly checked for system update for my Chromecast with Google TV 4K which started to download a version with patch level to Oct 2023. Right after the update wifi became unstable (which used to be rock solid) and I can't seem to find any information on this version? Not sure how I got this version in the first place if it's not ready for public? Is there anyway to go back to the previous version?

This update killed my Chromecast. Laggy, frame drops, horrible!

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. We’re sorry for the trouble, and this is not the experience that we wanted you to have. It seems that there are a number of users who are experiencing this issue. Kindly report this via Settings > Help and Feedback and describe what’s going on in detail. Make sure you include the identifier “CCT3 - Stutter After Update” in your description of what happened. The engineering team collects these for diagnostics.

Post it here once you’re done. We look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hi everyone,

Thanks to those who sent feedback.

The update roll-out is still ongoing and hasn’t reached its completion. We’re sorry if some users are experiencing issues while this update is still rolling out. We’re anticipating all of this to be completed by early next year or around January. Please bear with us.

Let us know if you have other questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kimy

Hi Kimy, I am still observing wifi instability on this version.

Hi Kikifatcat,

Thanks for the reply. How can you tell that it is losing Wi-Fi stability? Is it actually disconnecting from the network? Or is it buffering? The bug is related to stuttering issues and distorted displays that appeared after the previous update. The roll-out fix patches, which are expected to be completed these coming days, included recognized issues, including this stuttering issue. If you think the distortion of the display is Wi-Fi stability-related, no, there’s no issue with the programs running on the network chipset of the Chromecast devices. We’ll know more once it reaches completion. Bear with us in the meantime.

Sincerely,

Kimy

Since the recent update I'm experiencing issues with stuttering video and a poor wifi connection.

I get constant buffering while streaming through Plex (so internal network, it's no internet issue).  When I do some speedtests it won't go over 25mbit, most of the time way less.  Normally it should be around 80mbit.

Totally unusable for the moment.

Hi Fire69,

Thanks for joining the thread. We’re sorry for the trouble, but I suggest you keep it connected to Wi-Fi until the roll-out is completed. We’ll update you on the progress.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hi everyone,

Just an update. The ticket status still shows open, and the last message I heard was that Chromecast with Google TV 4K is almost complete, while Chromecast with Google TV HD is halfway through. For the 4K version users, kindly check if you’re still experiencing issues, as it’s possible that it’s already completed. For the HD version users, kindly hang on since we're almost there. We’ll keep you posted.

Warmly,

Kimy

What does that mean?  The issues should be resolved without installing a firmware update?  How is that possible?

Hello Fire69,

Thanks for the reply. Is your Chromecast with Google TV (4K) running on Android TV OS build STTE.230915.005.S1.10942527? If not, kindly check for updates. You can also do a factory reset one last time for a full clean-up. Let us know how it goes.

I have already sent a message requesting an update on the progress of this bug. I’m just waiting for a reply and will relay the information here.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hi,

Yes, that's the version I'm running.  Upgrading to this version is what caused the issues.

I really don't want to factory reset...

Is there an actual fix coming for these problems?

Hi Fire69,

Just an update. A rollout for the new Android TV OS build, STTL.231114.004, has been released. Kindly update yours, and if it is not available, you may need to factory reset to force it. Let us know how it goes.

Warmly,

Hi Kimy, the issue I observe is around wifi staying connected. Prior to the update there was zero issue - I never saw wifi disconnecting. Right now half way through streaming the connection would drop and reconnect between 2.4GHz to 5Ghz or vice versa. It doesn't happen all the time, maybe once a day, but it never happened before. If there's no wifi change with the upcoming patch I will see how it goes after the rollout.

Hello Kikifatcat,

Understood! Once the roll-out has been completed, we’ll see if this Wi-Fi situation will be cleared to know if it’s correlated. If not, we may need to dig into this further. I guess we'll have to wait for now.

After the update wifi still flicks to 2.4GHz for no reason when the signal is very strong on 5GHz.

Hi Kikifatcat,

Thanks for the reply. The Chromecast with Google TV switching to 2.4 GHz and/or 5 GHz is a normal behavior, unlike its predecessors (older versions) that only remember one network or bandwidth at a time. The 5 GHz band might show great signal bars on smartphones and laptops due to its hardware advantage over the Chromecast device, but a lot of factors could easily force the Chromecast device to switch to 2.4 GHz. If you can, try to split the SSID by naming 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz differently and have your Chromecast connect to just the 5 GHz. You may also turn off the broadcast of the 2.4 GHz band to force it to connect to the 5 GHz band only.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Kimy
