Chromecast version (SKU GA00439, model NC2-6A5)

Hello,

I bought Chromecast 3 (from a large Croatian chain store for computer equipment) to stream NBA games (NBA support said Chromecast 2 (which I had) does not support NBA streaming anymore since it now needs 1080p @ 60fps).

However, the NBA stream still does not work even with new device (that should be Chromecast 3) and NBA support claims I bought Chromecast 2 since it's model number is NC2-6A5 (they offered no links from Google to confirm that, just wiki and one random article).

My device looks like Gen3, it's box says "SKU GA00439" and its model number is NC2-6A5. Firmware number is 1.56.291998 (Google support site says that is Gen3).

I would attach pictures of my device, its box and firmware number, but I don't see an option for that?

Can anyone confirm to me that this device supports 1080p @ 60fps, so I can eliminate that as a reason for NBA stream not working when cast on TV?

You can see the picture of the device here (it is the store where I bought it).

Hi NBAchrome,

Thanks for reaching out. Based on the image you shared in the link, you have a Chromecast 3rd Gen. The Chromecast 3rd Gen supports 1080p, in up to 60fps. Check out this support website article to see its specifications.

Also, for your reference, the Chromecast 2nd Gen has a Chrome icon in the middle of the product while the Chromecast 3rd Gen has a G letter on it.

On the other hand, could you please tell us more about what's going on when streaming NBA app on your Chromecast 3rd Gen? Are you getting any messages? Is the cast icon missing in the app?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Thank you for the help!

No, there is no problem with starting the casting process. Problems occur with streaming - the streams constantly stop for buffering and/or skip ahead. The problem is exactly the same with Chromecast Gen2 (which I used previously and it worked perfectly fine until this season and upgrading of NBA stream quality) and Chromecast Gen3 (which I bought when NBA told me that they upgraded quality of streams and Gen2 is not fast enough to cast them to TV).

Since internet connection is far beyond the minimum requirement for streaming NBA (as stated by NBA itself) they claimed that the problem is with my device, that it cannot cast in 1080p @ 60fps.

My Chromecast looks like a Gen3 (according to every picture and your description), so it should be capable of 1080p @ 60fps. Perhaps the TV is the problem then (it supports 1080p resolution, but I couldn't find anything regarding fps speed).

Best regards,

Josip Planinac.

I have had the exact same problem.  Same Chromecast model.  Got the exact same reply from NBA support team.

NBA app is the only streaming service (Youtube, Prime, HBO, Disney+) that has this problem of constantly freezing and buffering for several seconds.  Seems NBA app support is using the GEN of the Chromecast as an excuse to not fix their app.

I checked my Chromecast's Firmware through the Google Home App, and it turns out that my Firmware 1.56.291998 is listed on the Chromecast site as GEN 3, so their claim that NC2-6A5 is GEN 2 is unfounded.

Now they at least started to admit there is a problem and they are working on it. I reported this issue when season started and argued with them until a few weeks ago when they admitted that it is a known issue.

Until then their response was "buy a new Chromecast GEN 3 from a more reputable seller because someone sold you a fake one".

And so they did nothing about it this entire season. Assholes.

Just to add, my TV is not the problem because stream is great when I connect laptop to TV by HDMI cable.

Same issue here.

All other apps work just fine (Youtube, Twitch, Amazon Prime). And when I watch the NBA on my mobile or PC it works well.

The problem is only when I try to use the chromecast. I have the same issue using a chromecast gen 2 and now a gen 3.

Already tried: clearing the cache, reinstall, switch to other network, switch to other hdmi. And still got the same issue.
