Chromecast with Google TV voice search stopped working

winterwolfes

Voice search is not longer working. I have heard the same feedback from others on reddit. Here is what is happening... When I press the voice button in the remote and say something like "play a Christmas story", it will show "play a Christmas story" on the TV but then it just changes to "Hold down the assistant button to talk" and then nothing happens. I have to type in every search now. I've tried rebooting. Unplugging and plugging back in. It has been like this for awhile now. Nothing works. Anyone know how to fix this?

Hi folks,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. We’re sorry for the trouble, and this is not the experience that we wanted you to have. There has been a bug related to this exact issue, which has recently been fixed. I just want to confirm if you have just experienced this or if this has been happening for quite some time now. If you do, if this has been going on for quite some time, a patch fix has been sent for this, and you may need to check for an update. You can also do a full clean-up by performing a factory reset and setting it up from scratch.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Kimy

Hi Kimy,

I've been having issues with the same problem for a month or two now.

I've just checked and there doesn't seem to be a software update available for the Chromecast.  I'd rather not do a factory reset if there is another way as I have three units to get fixed!

Thank you!

Hi Foxmeak,

Thanks for posting here. I understand your hesitation since you have three devices affected. You can attempt it on one device to see if it helps, and we can take it from there. Let us know how it goes.

Hi Kimy (and winterwolfes),

I did the factory reset on one of the devices, and it seems to have worked. It wasn't that onerous to be fair... Thanks for the assistance!

I had to do the factory reset. Its definitely a pain but that finally fixed the issue.

Thanks, Kimy. My system was up to date so I did the factory reset and that fixed the issue. It works properly again.

Hi winterwolfes,

This is awesome! I am glad that you finally sorted this out. There might be corrupted files that were cleaned up after the factory reset. Let us know if you have other questions or concerns.

Cheers,

Kimy

Hello Kimy, I recently joined this community and am experiencing a problem with my remote not responding when using Google Assistant. However, everything seems to be working fine when using Google Home. I performed a factory reset on my chromecast HD two days ago, but the issue persists. Could you please suggest a solution or share any available patches/updates? I am using the Google Chromecast HD version.

Hi ShahbazAsghar,

Thanks for joining this thread. Can you verify if this is related to the bug itself, as stated in this thread, or is this related to the remote’s Google Assistant button not initiating it? If you can read from the conversation above, you’ll know what the bug or the origin issue is. If this is about the actual remote, then we can troubleshoot the actual remote, and we’ll know from there if it's a hardware failure.

We look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Kimy

Hi Kimmy,

I believe the issue is related  to bug instead of remote. As when I press my Chromecast remote Google assistance button. It initiated command and shows sign of mic on top of the screen but doesn't recognize the voice command. Please support to fix this issue.

Hi folks,

Just an update. A rollout for the new Android TV OS build, STTL.231114.004, has been released. Kindly update yours, and if it is not available, you may need to factory reset to force it. Let us know how it goes.

Warmly,

Kimy

Hi FaduHrh,

Thanks for joining this thread. Unfortunately, adding VPN may cause more issues since part of the usual troubleshooting that we do here is turning off VPN if there is one. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns related to Chromecast devices.

Thanks,

Kimy
