At first I thought things were just locking or going weird (but annoying) now I think it is the remote that loses Bluetooth connection and takes several minutes to re-pair.
Symptoms: Total inability to control Google TV via remote. I also have a Harmony Hub that connects and usually works fine, but they both "die" at the same time. As the Harmony is mains powered there can be no battery issues.
Control is usually restored in 1-2 minutes, or after restarting Chromecast.
If not resolved will be returning and buying Roku Express, which sensibly works with he tried and test IR as a remote.

Thanks, but you missed an important part of my original post - the Chromecast losses ALL Bluetooth connections, including one to a mains powered Harmony Hub - sometimes they get remade after a few minutes, other times, like today, I had to restart the Chromecast

Alas, I tried that option and the form failed to submit without giving any reason.
The online chat also failed and I simply got cut off
Instead I went back to Amazon, spoke to a real person within 2 minutes who refunded me with in 5 minutes.
Google - be more like Amazon
