Google TV voice command no longer plays content directly on streaming app

Starting recently, Google Assistant on Google TV no longer auto-launches streaming content when I specify both the title and the platform.

Example command: “Hey Google, play Frozen on Disney+”

Result: Google TV shows “There are a few ways to watch this show” and makes me choose manually.

This used to automatically start playback on the specified service.

This change breaks hands-free use (kids/no remote accessibility use case).

Please escalate to restore direct playback when a platform is specified.

Hi @Milrtym54,

Thank you very much for reaching out to this community! I understand that recently, the Google Assistant on Google TV no longer automatically starts streaming content on a specific platform. The example you shared is very helpful as it verifies how this problem occurs. I know it can be very frustrating because it has changed from how easy it used to be, especially regarding being more child-friendly or without remote access. No worries, I'm here to help!

I would like to ask you a few questions to confirm the most appropriate troubleshooting steps:

  • What model of Chromecast device do you have? You can use this Google Help Center article to help identify your device: Chromecast and Google TV Streamer specifications
  • When did the inconvenience start?
  • Are you having the same issue with all apps, or with specific platforms?
  • Are you using the latest version of the Google Home app? If not, this Google Nest Help Center article provides helpful instructions: Update the Google Home app.
  • What's the Google TV Streamer 4K firmware version? You can use this help center article as reference: Find your device’s firmware version.
  • What is the make and model of your TV set?
  • What country are you located in?
  • Are you using an Android or iPhone to manage your Chromecast?
  • Is your smartphone updated?

In the meantime, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Make sure that the mobile device or tablet is signed in or linked to the same account as the Google Nest display, Google Home speakers, and/or Google streaming device.
  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Tap Settings > Google Assistant > Voice Match.
  • Find the streaming device and untick the checkbox next to it.
  • Go back to Google Assistant > Personal results.
  • Tap on the streaming device and turn on Personal results.

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Best regards,
Eduardo
