I gave up using Chromecast

My experience of Chromecast, in no particular order:

  • It locks up and you have to re-boot the TV and the computer to reset it.
  • Some things it just won’t play.  It’s fine on the laptop but on the TV you get picture but no sound or (more commonly) sound but no picture, or you get a message saying the content cannot be cast and you need to watch it on your device.  I think this is because it doesn’t recognise as many different video formats as VLC/Chrome does.
  • It defeats the ad-blocker for Channel 4 and ITVX.
  • Sometimes it inexplicitly won’t cast and you have to try several times to get the cast set up.
  • Sometimes after casting the playback just stops and clicking the play button on the laptop screen has no effect.
  • If you work by casting the entire screen, or the Google tab, the sound quality is poor, the picture quality is reduced and the motion is jerky.  NB my Laptop is only 1376x768 so I suspect its displaying at laptop resolution and up-scaling the video for the TV.
  • I’m convinced it buffers more than the laptop does, but I can’t prove that.
  • It comes up in NTSC mode, whereas the TV comes up in PAL mode, so sometimes you have to switch input channels on the TV to get the TV into the right mode.

Hi SaintHelenaInfo,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. We’re sorry for the trouble, and this is not the experience that we wanted you to have. Based on your description, this is more about casting using a computer. I understand that there have been some changes and a lot of things that happened with the Chrome browser that cause issues in casting. Kindly try to cast different cast-enabled apps using a smartphone or a tablet. The objective here is to identify if it really is your Chromecast device that is acting up or if this is a communication failure from the casting source via the Chrome browser. Once it is identified that your Chromecast device is working as intended, I suggest you give our friends at the Google Chrome Help Community a shout. They may know a particular setting that can be toggled in Chrome://flags, or they may have a workaround for this. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Kimy
