Loud Cracking Noise Instead of Sound: Issue with Google TV Streamer and Soundbar Connection

I recently bought a Google TV streamer and connected it to my 10+ year old Philips TV, which is paired with a Teufel Soundbar (Raumfeld edition, 6 years old). The soundbar is connected to the TV via an optical cable.

However, when I turn on the Google TV streamer, there’s no sound—just extremely loud cracking noises. On the other hand, when I switch to my Fire TV (which I plan to replace with the Google TV streamer), the sound works perfectly, and everything is connected in exactly the same way.

Do you have any idea what could be causing this issue?

I'm having this issue, too, on an older Sony TV with optical out. Before the Steamer I had a Chromecast with Google TV 4K and initially it was the same issue, but I could fix it by turning off the surround sound option in the Chromecast settings. I tried the same in the Streamer "advanced sounds settings", but no luck. I also tried all the manual sounds options but nothing helped. I hope this can be fixed with a software update. Since it used to work on the Chromecast, there should be a solution. For now I'm using analog AUX or the headphone jack, but my preference is optical out.

thanks a lot ... yes I guess I have to wait. Using aux sounds promising but somehow not "right" considering that it's actually a high-end device and the fire tv works perfect ... I really hope an update comes soon, otherwise i'll send the thing back.

Hi togo,

Thank you for reaching out to our community.

I'm sorry to hear that you're only getting loud cracking noises instead of sound when you turn on your Google TV streamer with your Philips TV and Teufel Soundbar (Raumfeld edition). Thank you for providing such detailed information; it will help me assist you better.

Here are some recommendations you can try to resolve the sound issue while using your devices with the Google TV Streamer 4K:

  1. Check Audio Settings:
  • On your Google TV, go to Settings > Sound.
  • Make sure your Teufel Soundbar is selected as the audio output.
  • Adjust the audio output format (like PCM or Dolby Digital) if needed.
  1. Verify Soundbar Settings:
  • Refer to your Teufel soundbar's manual or contact Teufel soundbar customer support for instructions.
  • Check if it's set to the correct input (usually HDMI).
  1. Inspect HDMI Cable:
  • Examine the HDMI cable for any physical damage.
  • If necessary, try a different HDMI cable to rule out cable issues. Make sure it's high-quality and compatible with 4K/HDR.
  1. Troubleshoot Interference:
  •  Check for interference facts. Avoid placing them near other electronic devices that might generate interference.
  • Temporarily unplug other electronic devices near your setup to check if the noise persists.
  1. Update Firmware:
  • Check for firmware updates for your Phillips TV and Teufel Soundbar.
  1. Ground Your Devices:
  • Ensure all devices are properly grounded.
  1. Use Power Isolators:
  • Consider using power isolators to separate your devices' power supplies.

I hope these troubleshooting steps are helpful. Please let me know.

Best regards,

Virna
