Hey folks, 

If you previously performed a factory reset, we’re happy to report that the Google Home app update will reach all users today.

Please make sure you’re on version 3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio. Check out this help center article if you need help updating the Google Home app.

If you’re still experiencing problems during setup, please reach out to customer support for further assistance.

Hi folks,

Thank you for your patience as we worked to resolve the issue with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. As of today, this disruption has been fixed.

If you did not perform a factory reset, your device should now function normally. If it is still not functioning as intended check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

For users who have performed a factory reset, you will need to update your Google Home app to the latest version (3.30.1.6 for Android and 3.30.106 for iOS) to set up your Chromecast (2nd gen) or Chromecast Audio device again. The app roll out has begun and may take a few days to roll out to everyone. We’ll post a confirmation once the roll out to all users is complete.

We sincerely apologize for this disruption and any inconvenience it may have caused, and we are committed to ensuring all users are back up and running as quickly as possible.

Hi everyone,

Thank you again for your patience, we have some good news - the fix should reach all users today. If your device has received the update it should be on the following firmware versions:

Chromecast (2nd gen): Firmware version 1.56.467165

Chromecast Audio: Firmware version 1.56.467166

Check the firmware version of your device by following the instructions here. If your device is not on the corresponding firmware version, please try rebooting your device to start the update process.

Please note: If you performed a factory reset during the troubleshooting process, you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup the device. The team is working diligently to resolve this, and we will provide next steps as soon as possible.

We have started to roll out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days. Your device must be connected to receive the update.

If you performed a factory reset during initial troubleshooting, you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup your device. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible. Please continue to check the Community page here for updates and next steps.

An update on the situation: the team has identified the cause of the issue impacting Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices.

Change date  on your mobile phone to 7-march-2025 and then you should be able to setup the device.

And found out it's nothing to do with me ..

So what am I supposed to do now ?

surely this was not caused by an expired certificate or incomplete testing like people are saying? 😳

 

Please update us GoogleNestTeam - mine stopped working three days ago mid-stream and id like to use my product that I purchased through you. 

Oh and heaps of us would have factory reset seeing as that’s what your troubleshooting pages tell people to do for fixes.

I got email that the problem is fixed but am still can’t connect to the wifi network and i want to inform you that I already reset factory before I contact the customer support so I don’t know how to deal with my device now

It’s Thursday morning and this issue with Chromecasts not connecting or being recognized has been happening since Sunday, that’s 5 days of interrupted service. That’s 5 days of not being able to access streaming services we are paying for in the meantime. One of your traditional troubleshooting suggestions is to reboot the device. A day after the initial interruption you post a strong suggestion not to do that…likely a little too late for many who took this advice. This is an epic fail for Google. I really hope that a solution is still in the works. If the units that were reset have been bricked then compensation is in order regardless of the age of the units. 

SSL certificate expired for a few million Chromecasts , there’re possible ways of fixing the issue which all involve code changes because I don’t see how they can fix it without code changes.  This will take time to fix if fixable at all .  I don’t believe we’ll have a fix quickly .

First: I'm sorry about my "bad english", I'm tryeing my best to communicate with language that is not my usual speaking language.

At sunday I thought we had issues with wifi... And I tried to fix connection by multiple little things that I have had from advices earlier. After several hours of trying I did factory reset my device BECAUSE support.google.com/chromecast advices said so, "if these steps didn't help you can factory reset your device". There was not any info about this problem and that we can not factory reset our deviced.

Very late at Sunday-monday night I thought my chormecast device is broken and that I have to buy new device because our family use Chromecast every day. 

At monday I tried to find out if there is any Chromecast on stores to buy... But no, there is not. Then I saw small headline about this problem... And I realized I'm not the only one who is having problems with Chromecast. After that I have been searching for information about this on my own language (finnish) but there is not much info about it in finnish. Now it's thursday, and yet there is very little information about this.

I really hope that they will tell us very soon how to solve this problem AFTER factory reset... It would have been so great, if this info was here sooner, like immediately on sunday night.

Is something in the device to stop it 10 years on? And  is it a coincidence you stopped developing a new version and now it’s obsolete? I thought It was something I done. Please fix it, how hard can it be? 

Just fricking be patient .  The pinned post says they are working on a solution.  They didn’t say the product was dropped .  Learn to read !

It can be pretty hard and even impossible sometimes … just be patient , this is a community page and that question already have been asked many times .

What is the problem? Either tell us that you (Google) don't have the intention of supporting old devices anymore or just fix it. It´s not like you don´t have the manpower nor knowledge to fix this today if you really wanted to. Right know this issue just damages the Google brand and the companys credibility.

Factory reset has been one of the suggested fixes for years, but now it's not?

The issue is different this time .  Until they fix the chromecast firmware and/or servers, if you remove it you can’t add it back to your google home without tweaking the date on your phone .  I feel like google  community manager could just provide a bit more information but would be more confusing to computer illiterates entitled people .  Silence is better , just annoying for community members that are actually computer literates 😉

I can confirm that the workarounds posted on Reddit and elsewhere will indeed restore Gen2 casting from Android devices and Chrome browser (sorry, iPhone users). I had mine back up 'n running by Monday morning. Not perfect, but for those who are impatient (and reasonably tech-savvy), it's a viable option until Google issues a proper security certificate fix.

Again, I feel like a parrot, YOUR chromecast internal ssl certificate that your applications are using got invalidated because an intermediary CA certificate expired .  We have to wait for a fix .

still waiting for update and yes - the first think what i do was "factory reset" and now nothing works - i can also don't install it again with my ios device... very sad...

Pedir paciencia está muy bien, pero es el cuarto día sin solución. Cuando lo van a restablecer? Si nos van a dejar sin Chromecast díganlo abiertamente y buscaremos otras soluciones, pero díganlo ya!
