Factory Reset Chromecast Fix

I did factory reset to my Chromecast 2nd generation and was able to fix it in a few minutes after understanding the root cause of the problem is the Chromecast device certificate expired. It's a very simple trick and I used and old phone to avoid any issue on my primary phone. The Chromecast certificate expired on March 9th, when you try to set up the device, the issue is Google Home app is not able to connect to the device because it figures its certificate has expired and the connection is not secured so it refuses to connect.

Fix:

  1. Go to date and time settings in your phone,.
  2. Disable the auto update from the network.
  3. Change the date to anytime before the expiry, March 9th, I set it to February 14th to be safe.
  4. Just do the normal device setup from Google Home App, it will be able to connect to the device because from the phone perspective (and Google Home App) the certificate is now valid and didn't expire yet 😂
  5. Once you complete the setup, it will automatically pull the latest build which contains the fix Google is rolling out.
  6. Your Chromecast is back working as normal, Congrats.
  7. Oh, change your phone settings back to auto update from the network.

Any time! ( Disclaimer - I work for Amazon 😎

Yes, that's the fix.

One error: the security certificate actually expired on March 9th, not March 12th as you stated. So you should temporarily set your phone's date to March 8th or earlier.

Thanks for the correction on the date, I went to the previous month to be safe 😁

Como vou saber quando estiver funcionando novamente?

If you performed a factory reset during your initial troubleshooting, you'll need to do this procedure to be able to receive the update/fix:

For all the people who performed a factory reset during their initial troubleshooting, this procedure will allow you to reconnect your Chromecast to your Wi-Fi network, so that it can receive the firmware update fix that Google started rolling out on 3/13.

1) Temporarily set the date on your smartphone (or tablet) to March 7, 2025 or earlier. If you don't know how to do that, see below.*

2) Use the Google Home app to re-setup your Chromecast by adding it as a new device (+). You still won't be able to cast, and the device will be grayed out in the Home app, but that's ok. Most importantly, it'll now be reconnected to your Wi-Fi network so that it can receive the firmware update fix.

3) Change your phone's date/time setting back to Auto now.

4) Sit back and wait for the firmware update from Google to be installed. This should restore your Chromecast to full functionality.

Note: Supposedly it's being done as a "phased rollout", so it could take a while for the firmware update to hit your Chromecast. Also, some have reported that power-cycling your Chromecast (unplug/re-plug the power cable) will sort of "provoke" the firmware update to be installed. Patience.

*How to change your phone's date/time settings:

For iPhone/iPad: go to Settings, General, Date & Time. Disable "Auto" and manually set the date to March 7, 2025 or earlier.

For most Android phones/tablets: Settings, General Management, Date and Time. Disable "Auto" and manually set the date to March 7, 2025 or earlier.

Google the fix for factory-reset devices; it's easy!

On your setup device: turn off auto-date, set the date to March 5, and you can easily connect to the Chromecast and let it update!

my iPhone won’t let me do that 😞

I've already performed a factory reset of the device. Please inform me about now what to do now as it's not able to connect to the WiFi network.  It's the second generation chromecast.
