Screen cast to TV from phone

Up until last weekend I had no problem with casting vids from sites. I like to do with screen cast so I can have subtitles. Now if I do it the screen will turn black for a second and then I get a popup saying casting has ended. It never started. I have this issue with a Google TV and on another TV with a 2nd generation Chromecast. I have tried casting from laptop and no issues. I have also casted from phone YouTube with no issues. Even if I hit the Chromecast icon on the video I get a black screen with the Chromecast symbol. I do get it to mirror but when the video starts playing it will pause on my TV and not on my phone. The sound will continue though. Thanks for any help

First step is a system reboot, power cycle all involved devices including your router, and try again.

Is it specific apps, all apps, etc?  Ie does it work from YouTube but not chrome?  If your browser and os updates ?

Thank you so much for the reply. I did a system reboot to the 2nd generation chromecast. I did a reboot to the router. I even called my wifi provider and they said everything is fine. I believe everything is up to date. It is specific websites that I go through a browser. Some websites like nhl.com will work sometimes. Youtube has worked every single time. A porn website does not work at all. ( tried this just for the sake of this experiment. lol) Now the problem has spread to my laptop as I am getting the screen with just the chromecast icon when I try to cast.

Sounds like either the sites themselves are blocking casting, or there is a VPN active that could be causing an issue.   Are you using a VPN ?  If so turn it off, and try without it.

I thought about the VPN. On my phone I use Brave so I tried it again through google chrome and I got the same results. I wondered if it is the websites but I would be surprised if it is them. Honestly I think it is google itself. We all know that google wants us using just their products and that is it. I think that is why youtube works with no problem but other websites not sanctioned by them are giving me issues. This all seemed to coincide with the announcement they were discontinuing the chromecast too.

To be clear... They aren't cancelling Chromecast as a service , just the older Chromecast devices.. the tv streamer was just released as a replacement to the Chromecast with Google TV.

Saying this, no...it's not Google blocking it.  Does Netflix work, or prime, they are not Google services, what about Plex?  These all work for me.   I still suspect something on your local network is causing the issue, does your wifi have more than 2 band (ie 2.4 ghz and 5ghz)..are there multiple networks ..

I just installed plex on my phone and tried it. When I hit the screen cast tab which is located near flashlight and those tabs it did not work. The screen on my TV went black and right back to the home page. I got the pop up box on phone saying casting has ended. It never started. When I hit the Chromecast icon on the Plex app that did work. I have wondered about my network. That is why I called my provider. Last week I was playing a poker app on Google TV and twice I got a Wi-Fi signal basically saying it lost it. Yesterday while downloading a file on my laptop it stopped and said check Internet connection. I only have the one network

Okay so that sounds like you are trying to screen mirror (casting near the flashlight icon) , vs casting (using the app).  Screen mirror does have issues when it comes to drm policies on different sites, I personally never use it, try casting from within the app itself and it will work.   For websites , some will have casting embedded in the video player, and those should work fine.   Again casting the entire screen will cause issues more often than not.

I do like to screen mirror so I can get the subtitles. Up until last weekend I never had a problem. If I did have an issue I would use the embedded icon. But that isn't working either. If it hit that my screen changes to a black screen with the Chromecast icon in the middle and nothing happens afterwards

Did you reboot your phone ?

Let me say thank you for your replies and help. It is greatly appreciated. Yes I rebooted that a couple of different times.

Okay try clearing your data and cache from Google play services.

On your Android phone open the Settings app Settings.

Tap Apps and then See all apps.

Tap Google Play services.

Tap Storage and then Clear cache.

Tap Manage space and then Clear all data.

That did not do it. The screen does change when I hit cast. It is like it wants to connect but just won't. I tried the embedded icon too and I go the screen with the icon on my TV. When I went to stop casting it says no casting media selected. It has said this the whole time when I do the embed
