Turn On/OFF LG TV with Chromecast Remote with Voice

Hello everyone,

So I'm a little baffled and wondering if things supposed to work that way, but when i hold down the voice option on Chromecast remote and say "TV off or On", nothing happens, but you hear the voice assistant saying she is going to do it, but if a say "Ok Google TV On/ OFF" on my phone or Google Mini it works fine.

Hi Rappadappa77,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. What I usually do is just give the command “Turn off” or “Turn on,” but I give it a good 2 seconds of holding the assistant button on the Chromecast Voice Remote. No need for the “Hey Google” or “OK Google” queue. Give it a try, and let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Kimy

That actually worked, thank you for your help, i was saying TV Off or TV On with the remote, i only used the Ok Google or Hey Google with phone or google mini device.

Howard

How do i set up the remote to turn off Chromecast only and not the TV if i press the power button on the remote, but still able to use my voice to turn on and off the TV?

Hello Rappadappa77,

Thanks for the reply. The Chromecast device will not turn off as long as it’s plugged in, but it would be on standby if not in use. I hope this answers your questions. I’m glad that everything has been sorted out here. Let us know if you still have questions or concerns.

Cheers,

Kimy

Hello Kimy,

Not sure if you fully understand but let me give you my setup... So I have an LG TV, Vizio Sound bar etc, what is best setup in the remotes section of the Chromecast App, currently I have Power LG TV on Auto (CEC), Volume Vizio Sound bar on LG TV and Input LG TV .

Hi Howard,

Thanks for the details. I’m kind of lost here; kindly help me more. Does this mean you don’t have an actual Chromecast device (Chromecast with Google TV) attached to your TV? And what you use is a Chromecast app? We don’t have a Chromecast app, but we do have a Google Home app and a Google TV app, both of which have remote functions that work on TVs with built-in Chromecast and/or Google TV. Keep us posted.

Thanks,

Kimy

Sorry for the confusion, yes I have a Chromecast 4K device attached to back of my LG TV.

Hello Howard,

Thanks for clarifying that. The bottom line is that you can’t turn the Chromecast with Google TV off unless you unplug it, be it using the remote buttons, voice command, etc. When you ask it to turn off, it will turn off the display and/or TV, and then it will go on standby, waiting for another command. I hope this sheds some light on the situation. Let me know if you still have further questions.

Cheers,

Kimy

Hey Kimy,

Thank you for all the information, so in setup of remote section in settings leaving the Power on Auto (CEC) would be best bet for me?

Hi Howard,

That’s right. There are scenarios and users that use the infrared functions instead of the CEC and enable the CEC of their TV instead of the Chromecast device. Whichever works for you is fine; different folks, different strokes. Feel free to let us know if you still need help.

Warmly,

Kimy

Ok, I just want to be able to turn off my TV with voice or power button, whichever I feel at the time.

Hope Google has update in the future that if I use my voice it stays on previous input I turned it off with instead of going to Google TV, so I don't have to manually switch it back to my Cable Box.

Hello Howard,

The input button of the Chromecast Voice Remote uses infrared and not CEC, and despite that, not all brands and models are compatible with it; most of the time, it’s just compatible with power, volume, or both, and I rarely encounter TVs compatible with input control via infrared. As per Google Assistant controlling innate TV controls, I’ve seen vloggers make it work, but only on TVs with built-in Google Assistant or with a feature called “Works with Google." It’s a long (and tedious) process and is not actually handled by the Google team because those are premade commands and automation scripts by the TV manufacturers. You can always search on YouTube to see if your TV model is capable of that. Let us know if you still have other concerns.

Cheers,

Kimy
