Unable to use Chromecast since new Hub installed

clayto

Since my new Hub was installed, with a new Network, I have been unable to use Chromecast on my Android 7 Tablet. At first it was trying to access my old Network, not the new one. I have got past that, and now get the Welcome screen and the new Network is correctly named, but what do I do next? I am told to do things which cant be done, for example to use Google Home to set up a new Network ---  but that app is not available for my Android 7 Tablet. So what else can I do?

If you've already changed to a different Wi-Fi network, you need to use the Google Home app on a phone or tablet to update it's Wi-Fi settings. There is no other way unfortunately, you need have a phone or tablet that supports the Google Home app.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top left, tap Add + > Set up device > New device > set up new devices in your home.
  3. Follow the in-app steps.

If these steps above don’t solve the issue, you’ll need to factory reset your Chromecast, then set it up again using your new Wi-Fi network and password. If you're using Chromecast with Google TV, follow these setup steps instead.

The only alternative instead of factory resetting your Chromecast, if you're comfortable changing your router settings, you can change your new Wi-Fi network name and password in your router's settings to be the same as the previous ones. Your device should then automatically connect to the Wi-Fi.

Thank you very much! This is the first response I have had, from a variety of sources, which is clearly on the right track. Alas, despite that, it is still unable to contact with my Chromecast, though it is trying to do so. Can you please confirm I am using the right password, the one shown on the card which came with the new Router, which refers to it as Wireless Password / key: xxx (14 characters). Next, I did reset my Chromecast in an early stage of this prolonged saga ie. presssed button, switched off power, removed / reconnected device --- as a result of which I got a new Welcome screen with Chromecst 3691 shown. I am going to repeat that while I wait for your reply to this.

Yes, your new Wifi network name and password you should be using is usually printed on a card like the one you describe. Connect the phone or tablet you're going to use for setup to that Wifi network first. Now that your Chromecast is reset, you can go through setup and connect it to your new Wifi network.

I have not yet been able to connect correctly. I think I am very close, for example in following the steps in Google Home. On the TV Chromecast Welcome screen these steps are  shown as taking place, right up to possibly the last one, connecting Chromecast to the new Network. Then it fails. Two basic points: (1) the light on the Chromecast is white (as it should be) but flickering all the time (as it should not be, I understand) (2) when the Chromecast is 'connected' to my local network, it cannot connect to the internet and vice versa. In the list of available networks, shown best in my tablet, Chromecast is referred to as 'Connected --- no internet'. Maybe if these anomalies are resolved it will work?

Hello clayto,

To confirm, are you still using your tablet running on Android 7 to set up the Chromecast?  Please be advised that in order to use the Google Home app and successfully set up your Chromecast, you must have a phone or tablet that is running on Android 8 and later.

Also, pulsing or flickering white light on your Chromecast means that it is ready to be set up and the Chromecast network that you can see in your Wi-Fi list on the tablet settings is the Chromecast SSID that you can use to set up the correct Chromecast using the Google Home app.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Thanks for your reply. No, I have not been using the Android 7 tablet to set up the Chromecast as I knew there was a question over it, though I recall (possibly in error) reading that it should be OK.    I am using an Android 10 phone, with the Home app, which works well up to what seems to be the last (?) stage, the final connection to the internet. I am glad you explained about the flickering light, I had not found anything to say what it meant, So if I understand right, it is not indicating a problem, merely that the final stage has not yet been reached --- except of course that is the thing still standing in the way and preventing my use of the Chromecast.

Hi there,

Got it. May I know the make and model of your Hub? If your Chromecast still won't connect to your network, please try to set it up and connect to a mobile hotspot so we can isolate the issue. Also, please see the router settings below that you need to check and configure on your router:

Enable these settings on your router, if applicable:

Disable these settings on your router, if applicable:

Note: If you aren’t not familiar with these settings, you may refer to your router manufacturer's documentation or you may contact your internet service provider for help.

Thanks,

Jennifer
