I no longer can recommend buying Google TV chromecast as since the last update we are unable to install apps we used to be able to install.
This is starting to look more like apple, policing what you can and cannot install rather then android.

Hi Dron,
App developers choose which devices their apps can be installed on. I'm a UK user and the All 4 app isn't available for the Chromecast with Google TV but I can cast it from my phone. This is the TV service 'Channel 4' that has made that decision and not Google.
If you mean install (side load) apps that are not available from the Google Play store this is possible by switching developer mode on but is not recommend by Google.

As I said... nanny the user like apple and Microsoft.
Fyi, I already enabled developer mode on my chromecast as my apps stopped working after Google's recent updated forced me to do a factory reset.
And if you ask developers they will tell you that Google keeps changing its policy all the time and app developers cannot follow fast enough to make modifications which constantly causes apps to be categorised as "unknown" and be removed from people's devices. So if Google was stable enough to not constantly cause app developers to chase after their policy then people would not need to enable developer mode to start with.

What apps are you not able to install recently that you could before?
As this is a community forum supported by other users and community specialist's the best way to share your thoughts, feedback or feature requests with the Chromecast team is by leaving feedback for them.

Well, I didn't get any help... but as I said, opening developer mode would stop Google from blocking apps every time they change their policy. So I managed to help myself

Hey there Dron,
I'm glad to hear you were able to find a work-around! In that case, is there anything else you wanted to ask, or should I go ahead and lock up the thread?
Best regards,
Jeran
