I saw on the help page after purchasing that it doesn't support this style and am trying to decide whether I need to return it. Is the inability to connect to hotel style wifi something that will change?

Probably not anytime soon.
There are reasons for that. Hotel WiFis are one of two kinds of networks. Either they are wide-open and then EVERYONE in the hotel would be able to see your Chromecast and cast to it at any time. Or, they have stronger security where devices are not allowed to talk to each other and are only given access to the internet. But, that makes it hard to impossible to setup and control your Chromecast.
If you are in hotels a lot, there is a great trick that I have been using for years. Get a Travel Router and pre-set the devices you travel with to connect to that Travel Router. Then, when you get to the hotel, you set the Travel Router to connect to the hotel and that router makes a new private WiFi that only your devices are on. That is ONE thing to change as you go from Hotel to Hotel rather than having to update your phone, tablet, e-reader, computer, Chromecast, etc. And nobody else in the hotel can see or control your Chromecast.
