Hello everyone,
I recently installed WireGuard VPN on my Google TV streamer to enhance privacy and access region-locked content. While the installation went smoothly, I encountered some issues when trying to load and connect the VPN tunnels.
Issue Description
Whenever I attempt to load a VPN tunnel with WireGuard, the following happens:
The app freezes while trying to establish the VPN connection, with the screen stuck for several seconds.
Shortly after, the app fails to complete the connection and jumps back to the Google TV home screen, with WireGuard stopping entirely.
This prevents me from successfully using the VPN, whether I try to load the tunnel automatically or configure it manually.
Possible Cause
I suspect this issue might be related to the file management software I’m using. When accessing or editing WireGuard configuration files through a file manager, it seems to interfere with WireGuard’s operation. The file browser may not be handling the VPN configuration files’ paths or permissions correctly, causing WireGuard to crash when trying to connect.
Solutions Tried
Checked the configuration files: I’ve confirmed the configuration files work perfectly on other devices, such as my phone and computer.
Changed file browser: I tried using different file management apps to handle the WireGuard configuration, but the issue persists.
Reinstalled the app and restarted Google TV: I reinstalled WireGuard and restarted the device, but the problem remains unsolved.
Verified network connection: My network is functioning normally, and other apps can connect without issues when the VPN is off.
Looking for Help
Has anyone successfully set up WireGuard on Google TV? Can anyone recommend a file browser that works well with VPN configuration files? Or has anyone experienced similar issues with the app freezing and returning to the home screen, and found a solution?
I appreciate any suggestions or advice!

Hi WarsongPPN,
Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry that you're having trouble connecting your Google TV Streamer with VPN tunnels. I understand how frustrating this must be when you already try troubleshooting the situation. I'm here to help.
To verify the VPN connection, please do the following:
Make sure your Google TV Streamer and casting device (Google TV) are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and check if VPN is configured on your Google TV.
To check the network of the streaming device, ask the customer:
For Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer (4K), go to the top right corner of the Google TV screen and then All Settings and then Network and Internet.
In the mean time, please try to reboot your Google TV Streamer 4K:
Ask the customer to:
Let me know if you need any further questions.

I have the same issue and only on Google TV Streamer (while having several Google TV 4k and other Google / Android TV boxes). I verified all access settings for the Wireguard and file managers apps which seem to be correct.
I also tried several file managers but Wireguard is unable to get access to any other (file manager) app (->no pop-up asking which file manager or tool to use). Instead Wireguard hangs for a while, crashes in the background and I'm back on the home screen.
So there is definitely quite a bug behind. I hope Google will fix that soon, a second generation shouldn't be worse than the first one 🙂

Hi Byron
Thanks for contacting me. As mentioned it ONLY happens on the Google TV Streamer while it works flawlessly on all Google TV 4k Chromecast I own. Together with Wireguard I usually use FileManager+ on the Google TV 4k Chromecast or Android Boxes where as said it works.
On Google TV Streamer I have the latest Build / Firmware version at the point in time, which is
UTT3.240625.001.K5
I don't know what other information I'd need to add here to be helpful.
Regards,
Gsa123

Does file picker for android 14 require a receiver entry now in AndroidManifest.xml?

Having the exact same issue on Google TV Streamer. Worked previously on Chromecast with Google TV 4k.

Even flutter's file_picker fails on this device going into a loop crashing apps.
