YouTube app on Chromecast not opening. It just stuck on grey screen. I have

1. Cleared the cache
2. Uninstalled and reinstalled
3. Factory reset my Chromecast

I use Starlink and my speeds are usually north on 100Mbps. I have 2 Samsung smart tvs including a PS5 and the YouTube app works perfectly. It works well on my phone, PC, and iPad.

The issue started around a month ago.

Hello @rock4us2,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand that the YouTube app on your Chromecast is stuck on a grey screen and has been non-functional for about a month. I understand that you already completed the most common troubleshooting steps; thanks for that, and let's work together to find a solution.

Since a full factory reset was not successful, let's try a few final, specific steps focused on the device's system files and the user profile.

Step 1: Check and Force System Updates

Even after a factory reset, the device needs to immediately download the latest system software and the latest Play Store updates, which sometimes resolve app compatibility issues.

Check for System Updates:

  • From the Chromecast's Home Screen, go to Settings (gear icon).
  • Select System -- About -- System update -- Check for updates.
  • Install any available updates.

Check for Play Store Updates:

  • On your TV, search for and open the Google Play Store app.
  • Go to your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  • Select Manage apps & games, Updates.
  • Ensure the YouTube app and any core Google system apps are completely up-to-date.

Step 2: Remove and Re-add Your Google Account

A corrupted user profile is a common cause of persistent app failures, even after an app-specific reset. Since the YouTube app is tied to your Google Account, removing and re-adding your entire profile might force a clean connection to the app's services.

  • From the Chromecast's Home Screen, go to Settings (gear icon).
  • Select Accounts & Sign In.
  • Select the profile you are currently using (the one with the YouTube issue).
  • Select Remove account. (If this is your only account, the device may factory reset again.)
  • Select Add account and follow the on-screen instructions to sign back in with your Google Account.

Step 3: Try Casting from Another Device

If you are using a Chromecast with Google TV, try casting a video from your phone's YouTube app to the Chromecast.

  • Does the video cast and play correctly? If it does, it confirms the issue is isolated to the local YouTube app interface on the Chromecast, not the device's ability to process YouTube video data.

Please try Step 1 and Step 2. If the problem persists, confirm what type of Chromecast you are using and the result of the casting test in Step 3.

Regards,

Kevin

Thank you very much. I update Firmware and it didn't solve the issue.

I then removed my account and went thru the process of readding, I got so many errors during the process, Google Home finished the process but the Chromecast was just stuck.

I then removed power, then reconnected, the Chromocast didn't want to connect to wifi. After trying so many times to reconnect I then removed power waited for a minute then the Chromecast connected but I still had to do the setup

I am finally in, YouTube seems to be working now. It logs in, I'll wait and see.
