google streamer tv 4k and Denon avr x4800h dont play well together

So my avr has all the lastest bells and whistles. I have the google tv plugged into mediabox port on avr. I have a 2.1 hdmi cable plugged into earc on the avr and my lg tv. (lg c4 83" oled).  First I set up my avr with  Audyssey assistant. I have a 7.1.2 speaker setup. Includes atmos speakers. When I connected google tv it works for the most part but sound and picture are off. I use the avr as a passthru. seems the avr and google settings are butting heads. Seems to reduce volume a considerable amount. Don't have access to all my sound modes on the avr. My avr recognized the google tv in setup. When watching a movie on my ps5 it is like night and day. I couldn't find much info on connecting to avr. Mostly tv setups. Everything was fine before adding google tv.

Hi @Mark1966,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand that you're experiencing communication issues between your Google TV Streamer and your AVR, particularly regarding volume levels and available sound modes. I also see that you're facing an audio and video sync issue, especially after setting up your high-end system with the LG C4 and a 7.1.2 Atmos configuration. I know how important it is to achieve that 'night and day' quality you're enjoying with your PS5. Don’t worry—I’m here to help you get this all sorted out!
To better assist you, I’d like to gather a bit more information:

  • Do your TV and Denon AVR support HDMI 2.1?
  • Does your Denon AVR support HDCP 2.2?
  • How many Mbps is your internet connection speed?
  • In your Google TV Streamer settings under Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings, which option is currently selected under "Select formats" (Auto, None, or Manual)?
  • How far from the router is your Google TV Streamer?
  • Is your Google TV Streamer 4K currently connected to a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network?
  • Is the Google TV Streamer connected through Wi-Fi or Ethernet?
  • If you are using an HDMI cable to connect your Google TV Streamer:
  • Are you using an 'Ultra High Speed' HDMI 2.1 certified cable?
  • How long is your HDMI cable?
  • Is your Google TV Streamer updated? Check out this article's Google Nest Help Center guide: Updates to your Chromecast or Google TV Streamer.
  • When you mention the image is "off," are you noticing issues specifically with HDR, Dolby Vision, or color tinting?

@Júlialara, thanks for the information provided.
Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Regards,
Beula

My receiver supports all the lastest tech stuff. Everything is Ethernet connected. Running about 800+mbps Not sure of the ghz. My router has 2.4 and 5. I have all ultra high speed HDMI cables less than 3 ft. Sound format is on auto. Picture looks closer to 1080p than 4k. I have a new LG OLED tv. Everything is updated.

Hi @Mark1966,

Thanks for your response! To help resolve the issues you’re experiencing with your Google TV Streamer, I recommend trying the following steps:

  • Make sure the Google streaming device receives power and the TV is on the right input.
  •  On your Voice Remote check if the streaming device is on mute.
  • Confirm that your AVR are not set to Mute.
  •  Check if the sound plays on the correct audio channel.
  •  Double-check that your TV or AVR is set to the correct audio input/source.
  • Use a different HDMI device on the same HDMI input and check if audio works.
  • Use a different HDMI input.
  • Adjust the sound settings on your Google TV Streamer by going to:
    • Go to Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings.

    • Try changing the "Formats" option to Manual and ensure all formats supported by your.
    • Denon (such as Dolby Atmos or DTS-X) are selected.

Keep me updated.

I have a similar problem with my Hardon Kardon AVR. Sometimes the audio is detected correct as Dolby Digital+, sometimes no audio.

Is this a wider known problem with the Google Streamer working with AVR's? (I am wondering whether to return the streamer within 14 days of purchasing)

Hi @RLal,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand that you’re experiencing intermittent audio issues with your Harman Kardon AVR, where it occasionally fails to detect Dolby Digital correctly. I know how important it is that your devices work as expected.
To help resolve this, I’d like you to answer the questions mentioned above and provide the following information:

  • Is your Google TV Streamer connected to an external sound system? If so, could you describe your setup and how everything is connected?
  • What is the make and  model of you TV?

Keep me updated.

Hi Beula,

I only recently bought the Google 4K streamer, previously I used a TV streamer provided by my Internet provider without problems. (I also switched my subscription from Internet+TV+ calling to Internet only hence the change)

The streamer is connected via Ethernet, to the AVR Main input with HDMI high speed and the AVR output HDMI to the TV. Both the Harman Kardon AVR and Philips TV are older devices but i didn't have a problem with sporadically finding sound or not with the previous streamer. And besides the TV is displaying video consistently also with the Google streamer.

Hi @RLal,

Thanks for your response! To help resolve the audio detection issue, I recommend following these steps:
1.Set Audio Formats to "Manual".
By default, the Google TV Streamer is set to 'Auto,' which causes it to constantly renegotiate the sound format. Setting this to Manual forces a consistent signal.

  • On your Google TV, go to Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings.
  • Select Select formats and change it from 'Auto' to Manual.
  • Crucial Step: Toggle ON only the formats your Harman Kardon explicitly supports (usually Dolby Digital and DTS). Turn off any formats your AVR does not support, such as Dolby Atmos or DTS-HD.

2. Toggle "Fixed Volume".
Sometimes the internal software volume of the Streamer conflicts with the AVR's hardware volume.

  • Go to Settings > Display & Sound > HDMI-CEC.
  • Look for Volume Control. If it is set to 'Chromecast' or 'Streamer,' try switching it to CEC or Fixed Volume. This allows the Harman Kardon to handle all audio decoding without interference from the Streamer.

3. Check Audio Offset Settings.
Keep me posted.

Thanks Beula for your suggestions.

I went to Settings - Display & Sound - Surround sound settings and manually selected the Dolby Digital and + (and disabled Dolby Atmos and DTS)

At least now the sound is detected properly. The volume is a bit low, so I also disabled the Volume Leveller on the settings. Hope that fixes the level too

@rbtv77plus It sounds like your system isn’t “broken,” just caught in a tug-of-war between how the Google TV handles audio output and how the Denon wants to process it. When you run everything through the AVR, devices like the PS5 behave nicely because they pass clean, consistent signals, but the Google streamer tends to auto-manage formats, volume levels, and even dynamic range, which can confuse the receiver and limit available sound modes. That’s likely why you’re seeing lower volume and mismatched audio/video sync—it’s not true passthrough. You might get better results by forcing the Google TV’s audio settings to a fixed format (like Dolby Digital Plus) and disabling any volume leveling or “auto” audio features, so the Denon can take full control the way it does with your PS5.
