"something went wrong" when trying to setup chromecast ultra with two iphones via hot spot

Hello, I am without wifi, and have been trying to use my chromecast ultra through my mobile hotspot.  I have researched as much as I can, using two iphones.

1 to set up mobile hotspot. The other to set up device through google home.

I get to the point it's almost connected, but then it says "something went wrong"

There's not much info on trouble shooting, would love some assistance solving the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

Thank you very much for contacting the community! I recognize what you have been experiencing with your Chromecast Ultra; when you tried to use an iPhone as a mobile hotspot to connect another iPhone, you received a 'something went wrong' error message. I appreciate you taking the time to research these troubleshooting steps. Don't worry—I am here to help!
I'd like to ask a few questions to ensure I provide the most relevant troubleshooting steps:

  • Are both iPhones running the latest version of iOS?
  • What color is the LED light on the side of the Chromecast Ultra? Is it solid or blinking?
  • Is the Chromecast Ultra being powered by the USB port on the TV, or is it plugged directly into a wall outlet using its original power adapter?
  • What's the TV brand and model?
  • What's the firmware version?

We always recommend a direct Wi-Fi connection to ensure the Chromecast functions correctly:

  • For Chromecast (1st Gen), connect to a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz network.
  • For Chromecast (2nd Gen and 3rd Gen), connect to a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network.
  • For Chromecast Ultra, connect to a Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac 5 GHz network.

Please feel free to share any additional details you think might be relevant.

Regards,

Dominic
