Thanks for the tip. It might work for others. I can add the thermostat to Google home to start with, so I can't rename it. Nothing seems to work.

I already tried that. Though the Thermostat is on the same WiFi network, it can't find the device. Seems like Google have stopped supporting older devices. I can only control the nest thermostat through the Nest app now.

You'd think Google would offer upa solution huh? Nothing from them at all. Maybe thier products are life limited?something to consider before buying in the future.
