Google home stopped working with nest thermostat

Sam11
Community Member

Hi. Up until a few days ago, I was able to control the thermostat through voice control via the Google home app. All of a sudden, this speed and the feedback given by Google home is that the nest device is not connected. They are both (Google home and nest thermostat) on the same router network via WiFi at 5ghz. I have tried to factory reset the thermostat. Reset Google home. Reset the modem but nothing works. When I try to add the device to Google home, I get either a error message doing 'unable to start device pairing. Configuration unavailable' or I get asked for the last 4 digits from my nest thermostat serial number but then have no option to enter them (non interactive screen appears). Nothing has changed at my end. Same router, thermostat, Google home etc. When I do get asked at some points to login using my email/password combination, this is not accepted either even though I know it's correct. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks 👍🏽

OK, so this has finally been resolved through a phone call with the Google help desk.

I had to create a new 'structure' in my Nest App. Other than 'Home', I created a new place called 'Test'. Under Test, I added my Nest Thermostat, this involved scanning the QR code at the back of the thermostat and also entering the Entry Key (6 digit alphanumeric key you can get from the thermostat settings). Once I'd added this, I had to ensure that the placement of the thermostat was in a room that I had not previously assigned anything to, in my case, the bathroom. You can assign the placement through the settings on the Nest thermostat. After this was done, I force closed the Google home app and reopened it. My new structure 'Test' was now visible (along with Home) and under it, I could see the Bathroom Thermostat. I'm now able to use voice control again to change the nest thermostat settings.

I've no idea why it stopped working but the solution seems to be to add the thermostat to a new home and room in the Nest app. Without the call to Google, this would not have been resolved.

Hi Sam11,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with adding your Nest Thermostat to the app. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • Are you pairing the Nest Thermostat to the Nest app or the Google Home app?

If you haven't yet, please try the steps on this link.

Thanks,

Edward

I am in the same boat. Exact same thing happening. I have a Gen 1 Nest thermostat. It is detecting in the Google home app but when I try to use voice command it says "sorry, something went wrong here"  Happening in all my Google minis.

You have to call it thermostate!!

Hi, I have a 3rd generation thermostat. Yes, I've tried pairing it through Google home and the nest app. I either get a configuration error or it asks for the 4 digits of my serial number but then allow me to input the data (non interactive screen). I raised the issue with Google directly over a week ago but still waiting for their UK branch to respond.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the response. To isolate the issue, could you try changing the room where it's setup to in the Google Home app then reboot your Google Home device before trying the voice command again.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Edward

Thanks Edward. Tried that. Same result. Another thing that is noticed is that you can change the temperature in the Home App or via voice command.  it you can not turn off or change mode in the home app or via voice command. (you can in the Nest app without problem)

Hi RBari,

Thanks for the response. Could you share the exact command that you're using? Also, do you have other Nest devices on your Google Home app?

Thanks,

Edward

Mine isn't in a room on Google home anymore. I deleted it in the hope to restore it from scratch, but now I can't add it back on again, as per the attempts in my earlier posts.

Is bizarre, worked for years and now it's stopped.

Hi Sam11,

Thanks for letting us know. Could you tell us the type of Nest Thermostat that you have and the exact message that you're getting when it fails to add to the app?

Thanks,

Edward

Hi. It's a 3rd generation nest thermostat, the one with the heat link.

It was installed some 7 odd years ago.

The message I get is 'Error! Unable to start device pairing. Configuration not available'

Hi. Any updates? Basically my 3rd generation nest learning thermostat can't be controlled via the Google assistant. I migrated the nest over to Google some time ago and it worked fine until earlier this year. And every time I try and link the nest thermostat to Google home (because it doesn't happen automatically for whatever reason) I get the message that 'configuration not available'. So it feels like an issue at Googles end.

Hey all,

Having the EXACT same issue and funny enough mine also started this past Friday. Same time you guys posted about this. A new OTA must be the culprit. I have a Gen 1 thermostat. Worked with my google home app for years without any issues whatsoever. A few days ago it just stopped. Google's response is "something went wrong with entryway" (Entryway is my thermostat). I can access it through the nest app and use it no problem. It shows up in my google home app still and when its on the temp controls and everything shows up in the google home app correctly. I just can no longer control it from the Google app. Doesn't respond to voice commands or manual inputs in the app. Removing it and adding it again does not work. Ive re-connected both devices to the wi-fi and have rebooted both of them including my router multiple times. No luck. Something with the latest update must have happened to cause this IMO.

I also started experiencing problems with my Harmony device a few days before the offshore with the nest, where Google home states telling me my voice could not be recognised (only when using harmony). I recalibrated the voice recognition several times but that didn't work. Finally, I reset harmony, reinstalled Google home app, rebooted the Google nest speaker... And eventually it started working again. But the Google mini in other rooms says it does not recognise my voice when I try and control Harmony from there.

And again, I can't add harmony to the Google home app anymore. I deleted it to try and relink it when I was trying to trouble shoot but now can't link it. It's able to be voice activated and I can control it from the harmony app. I have the same problem as the nest, I get to a certain point, put my email/password in and get told it isn't a match (I have saved passwords so know its correct).

I am having the same issue with the Google Home App and my 1st generation Nest thermostat.  Tried turning off the AC yesterday and the screen just flashes like it is processing, but then just reverts to the same mode and temperature.  If I change the temp, it will show as changed in the app, but the thermostat does not actually change.

As others have reported, the only way to control the thermostat is via the Nest app.  I have tried restarting and resetting with no change.

The Home app had an update today.  I installed the update that included bug fixes, but there is no change to the behavior.  Still cannot use the app to control the Nest Thermostat.

I am having the same problem. My gen1 Nest thermostat and Google Home worked just fine.  Voice controls seamless for the last 3-4 years or so and then all of a sudden "Something went wrong" every time I use ANY voice command.  I also cannot control the thermostat from the home app.  I cannot remove the thermostat from the home app.  I have reset everything from routers to mini's all over the home and nothing makes any difference. Also very frustrating is the lack of resolution to this issue from Google.  Google obviously did something to cause a system-wide failure of this integration and they seem to be uninterested in doing anything about it.  They only keep telling people "reset the device, reset the thermostat, change it to another room, remove and reimplement the device in the app".  This is same same thing Microsoft does with troubleshooting.  Everything is clear your cache, close your browser or program or OS and exit, wait then re-enter again.  After Microsfot telling us all that same advice over and over for the last 20+ years don't you think we know that already.  How about fixing the real issue on your end.

You'd think Google would offer upa solution huh? Nothing from them at all. Maybe thier products are life limited?something to consider before buying in the future.

My Nest Thermostat works in Nest App, Google Home app on phone, it works with voice command on my Google home mini, but does not work on my Google Home Max which is connected to the same LAN

It says "sorry that device is not set up yet, you can do that in assistant settings"

Google Mini firmware 1.56.282045

Google Max firmware 1.56.275994

oh and by the way, my Fire Cube Alexa controls the thermostat with voice commands too, I have to use my Alexa to turn my Vizio TV on and off with voice commands, because Google home stopped working with it

It is frustrating that something at their end has changed but there's no fix. To add to it, Harmony is also not being controlled via Google Home. It used to be, and now it says its doing the command but there's no action. The Harmony and thermostat issues started within days of each other but I was eventually able to get Harmony up and running for about 2 weeks, now that has stopped.

Harmony stopped a while ago for me, and now my thermostat seems to have been deemed unfit to associate with the Google HOME app.    Remember when we used to worry about some small startup "not being around" to support their internet connected product?  Now we have to worry that Google swallows up the small startup.

Having same issue

have same issues with Google Home max, works with Google Home mini and A L E X A

Still no fix to this issue. Nest thermostat is supposed to work with Google home, no matter how old the thermostat is. I've tried several routes to try and fix this. One route is to try and reset my password when I'm told that my email/password combination is wrong but whenever I do this, no reset email arrives. I've tried this half a dozen times.

There's no support available on this topic.

The support for Gen 1 WAS there, I read it in the past, but any instructions to fix this disconnect issue cannot be found and the HOME app does not have the proper entry routine for Gen 1 anymore.

I continue to see this issue with the Home app on my Galaxy S21 Ultra.  This has been ongoing for about 2 months.  In addition, my wife is now experiencing this on her iPhone with the Home app.  The Home app worked for her about a month ago.

FWIW, I shared access with her and she is logged in using her Gmail.  Worked in late May, but no longer works.  Nest app is the only option for controlling the 1st Gen Nest Thermostat remotely.

Mine started working again for some reason out of the blue (maybe there was an update?) so Im crossing my fingers and toes that things stay this way.

Thanks for the info.  I can confirm the app is working for me again too.

I’m have the same issue wherein my gen 1 nest thermostat responds to all inputs except voice commands to Nest Hubs.

Ran into this issue where the Google Assistant would no longer respond to voice commands for my thermostat. My solution was to install the Nest through the devices option in Google Assistant rather than the Home app.

Sam11

I already tried that. Though the Thermostat is on the same WiFi network, it can't find the device.

Seems like Google have stopped supporting older devices. I can only control the nest thermostat through the Nest app now.

I fixed it!  Go into Google Home>Select the Thermostat device>Settings>Device Info> then rename it 'Thermostat'. Mine used to be named 'Living Room' for the room that it was in.   I tell Google home to change the 'Thermostat' to 72 degrees and now it works.

this worked for me too, thank you so much

Sam11

Thanks for the tip. It might work for others. I can add the thermostat to Google home to start with, so I can't rename it. Nothing seems to work.

I've had a new thermostat installed which was sold with a Google nest speaker as the controller and I'm having this same problem.

Same here, Alexa will control nest thermostats, but Google speakers say nest thermostats don’t support that functionality
