Venstar specifically show them using it for the C wire.

After nearly a year of "low battery" issues I have resolved the issue
with my Nest 3rd Gen thermostat.Recap: I have had the Nest 3rd Gen
thermostat installed for nearly 5 years. My Nest 3rd Gen was wired via 4
wires (Y, G, Rc, W) as it was advertised...
People should stop trying to replace the battery. It is not a battery
issue, it is an issue with the firmware which can only be fixed by
Google updating it.
Just had this issue pop up as well. Gen 3, been working fine for 5
years, now this. No C wire. Google's changed something with firmware and
this has caused the issue.
