Will our gen 3 thermostat still be able to communicate with our gen 2?

So, if I purchase a Gen 3 to replace one of my thermostats (upstairs), will it still be able to communicate with my other Gen 2 (downstairs)?

That's really strange, because when I spoke to someone at Google Nest customer service, they told me that even though the website states the sensors are only compatible with Gen 3, they would also work with Gen 2. Now I'm REALLY confused!! 
