Nest thermostat

Hi!

We have 2 Nest Learning Thermostats, Gen. 2.  We'd like to get a temperature sensor disc for one of them, but I understand that those only work with Gen. 3.  If I purchase a new thermostat gen. 3, will it interface with the other one (the gen. 2)?  Or do I need to have both the same generation?

Hello @jro11

Thanks for reaching out to our Nest Community about this Nest sensor. I apologize for all the inconvenience. I'm here to help you with it.

Unfortunately, only the Nest learning thermostat 3rd generation has the option to connect a Nest sensor. But if you are interested in purchasing one of our thermostats, this won't interfere with the Nest Learning 2nd Gen you have. You will only have functions like this that are available only in the 3rd generation.

Feel free to keep posting if you have more questions about your thermostat. I'm happy to find a solution for you.

Best regards,

Douglas.

That's really strange, because when I spoke to someone at Google Nest customer service, they told me that even though the website states the sensors are only compatible with Gen 3, they would also work with Gen 2.  Now I'm REALLY confused!! 😞

Hi @jro11

Thanks for your reply. I'm really sorry for all this confusion. Let me give you more information about this device.

I apologize for this information provided by the previous support team. You can certainly check this compatibility of this device in our google store where it clarifies that for the Nest sensor a 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat is required.

Find this requirement on this page: Google Nest Temperature Sensor.

I appreciate your time and answers, if you have any further questions feel free to post them. I'll be happy to assist you.

Best regards,

Douglas.

So, if I purchase a Gen 3 to replace one of my thermostats (upstairs), will it still be able to communicate with my other Gen 2 (downstairs)?

Thanks for your response @jro11.

Absolutely yes, you can normally control your other thermostats even when they are not from the same generation. In both cases you can continue to operate them via the Nest App or directly on the device interfaces.

If you have any further questions about this device, please feel free to post them. I'll be more than happy to find an answer for you.

Best regards,

Douglas.

Will our gen 3 thermostat still be able to communicate with our gen 2?

Thanks for your response, @jro11.

You're absolutely right. You can typically control multiple Nest thermostats, even if they are different generations, through the Nest app. Each thermostat will function independently, allowing you to set specific preferences for each room or area.

If you have any further questions about managing or troubleshooting your Nest thermostats, please don't hesitate to ask.

Best regards,
Douglas
