2FA / Account Migration

Is there any way to either:

1. Unlink a phone number used for 2FA, or

2. Delete an inactive account?

Last I looked into this, the answer was no, but I'm hopeful that some change has happened on this front.

I had 2FA set up on a previous number tied to my primary google account ... we moved to a new city ... changed numbers … I forgot to unlink that number before losing access to it. When I realized this, after doing some research (and swearing) there was no workaround from Nest / Google.

I set up a new home with a different email address, and we've  been getting by. I have ignored the migrate to google prompts, because the email i'd migrate to was associated with my old nest account, so I'm missing out on the nest aware features I'd love to pay to use.

Has anything changed in the last couple years that will remedy my situation? Thanks.

@tryun

There are regular posts in this forum from customers who have 2-factor authentication but no longer have access to their old phone number.

Are the instructions below of any use at all?

Thanks for these. I should clarify, I have not migrated to a google account. The 2FA is from my Nest account, not a google app.

You could try contacting Google Nest Support, starting with the link below. Perhaps if you are able to provide them with serial numbers of your Google Nest devices (or other identifying information), they can provide a way forward.

Otherwise, this may be something Google Nest cannot resolve. Google Nest does not have any way of verifying your identity other than sending a code to your old email address; they don't know anything else about you if you were using a non-Google account, and they have no control over your old email provider.

It may be--as suggested on other threads in this forum--that your only recourse is to do a factory reset on all of your Google Nest devices and re-install them on a Google (gmail) Account, and hope that the re-installations go well.
