Cannot change name of nest devices on IOS

vargasdv1
Community Member

I have several Nest devices, Cameras, Doorbells, Nest Hubs, Nest Mini's and Nest Hub Max.

The Google Home app will not allow me to change the device name from my Hub, Mini's, or Hub Max.

I can change the device names for all other devices with no problem.

I'm using the latest IOS Google Home app and I deleted and re-downloaded the app to no avail.

Hi @vargasdv1,

Thanks for posting on the community page. I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties changing the name of your Google Nest speakers and displays from the Google Home app. I appreciate the troubleshooting steps you've already tried. Don't worry, let's work together to get this fixed. To better assist you, I have some questions for you:

  • Are your Google Nest speakers and displays in the same home structure as your other Google Nest devices?
  • Are you getting any error messages when you try to change the name of your Google Nest devices?
  • Is your phone's operating system up-to-date?

Please feel free to add any other relevant information.

Cheers,
Jonathan

  • Yes. Same home
  • No. No error message. Just does nothing at all
  • Yes. It is up to date. And we tried on 3 other iPhones with same results.

Hi @vargasdv1,

Thanks for your reply.

Is the "change name" option grayed out in the Google Home app? Can you share a picture of the Google Home app showing the "change name" option?

Hi @vargasdv1,

Thanks for your update.

Since you're receiving an error when trying to upload the picture here, a good option would be to create a file on Drive and upload the image there. Once you're done, you can share the link here. Please make sure to change the access, as in that way, I'll be able to review it.

Please keep me updated.

Cheers,
Jonathan

I sent you a scree recording of the error. As you can see, when I select my bedroom speaker to change the name, it does not respond. It does nothing at all.

I know how to do it, it just doesn’t work. I can change the name of all my other devices, cameras, doorbells, etc. However, I cannot change the name of my Nest home devices, Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max, and Nest Minis. It’s does nothing when I select it. I’ve tried everything except using an Android device. Because I don’t own one.

Hi @vargasdv1,

Thanks for your update. I appreciate the troubleshooting steps you've already tried and the video shared; it's really helpful. Let's try these steps:

  • Try to assign your Google Nest speakers and displays to a different room, and once done, try to change the name of your device.
  • Try to create a new home structure, and once done, move/transfer your Google Nest speakers and displays to a newly created home structure, then try changing the name of your device.

@jnion_polkin, thanks for the troubleshooting steps provided!

Please let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Jonathan
