Changing device names for router

Hi All,

We recently switched Internet providers to Starlink (live in a very rural area with limited options). I have multiple lights, speakers, Chromecast ultras all controlled through the home app. I'm not having issues connecting them to the new wifi; however, I can no longer tell which device is which under my router's device list. I contacted Starlink to see if there's a way to rename them in the router settings and that is not an option. I was told to rename each device individually in the device's settings. Does anyone know how to do this? I have them each named in the home app, but apparently the name isn't the same as the device id name. I have 22 devices connected and can only identify cell phones, tablets and PC's.

Are you using Starlink's own router or Google/Nest WiFi router? As for the devices, you can try narrowing it down to the IP addresses located within the settings for each device via the Google Home app. From my experience I can't view our smart lights in the "Connected Devices" found under the "WiFi" tab, but I could see all other devices (i.e. Chromecast, speakers/displays, etc.).

We've been using Starlink's router, but I've considered switching to our previous one as I could "rename" devices to recognize them with that router. I can tell what manufacturer the device os, but when you have multiple Google items like Chromecast and speakers, it's harder to tell which is which. I was just curious if there's a way to change their device id's.

The device renaming is a feature, but it's limited to certain devices. This article explains which devices you can rename and how to rename them: https://bit.ly/3pyZYzQ.

Unfortunately it looks like your router won't be able to be renamed in the Home app. That is a suggestion I can pass along to our teams, however, as I can see how it would be useful for you. If you have any other questions, let me know.
