Device naming issue

Edwar64896

I have a bunch of rooms in my house with devices that perform similar functions, such as air-conditioning.

Home knows what rooms they are in, however when google home displays the device names they simply show as "aircon" so i don't know which is which. Naming the device to contain the room name solves this, but is superfluous as it duplicates data.

How do i get google to display a device identifier with a room name so that it differentiates similar devices ?

Hey there,

Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to follow up and see if I could be of any help. I found an article that has some details. Please let me know if you are still having any trouble from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look and assist you further.

Thanks Jake. The article referenced is a simple guide to renaming devices. Renaming devices isn't the issue I am having. My concern is effectively having to 'duplicate' data. Google Home knows what room each device is in, but when the device name is displayed, no reference to the room is displayed, therefore the user doesn't know which "device' they are accessing.

For instance, I have "aircon" in two rooms. Kitchen and Living room. When I access "aircon" I get two references to the device. "Aircon" and "Aircon". Which one is which? Ideally, the app should display the room as well, otherwise the only solution to this is to redundantly name each device with the room name, which is superfluous.

Hi folks,

@Jake, thanks for the help.

@Edwar64896, you can test each device in each room which one works. From there you can decide to delete the room where the duplicate name is synced to and leave the other room as the default. You can also create another home structure and transfer the devices that you're using there and delete the old home structure. Click this guide for more information and troubleshooting and tell me how it goes.

Dan

Thanks for the help and suggestion Dan. To be honest, this doesn't really cover the use case. I don't want to delete any of the devices and no one device is more 'default' than the other.

The example in my case is a split-system aircon in the kitchen and another one in the lounge. They are both called "aircon". However when Google home references them they are both referred to and displayed as "aircon". There needs to be a  qualifier displayed to clearly indicate

Hello again,

Got it. You may refer to this thread instead since this includes the sync between the Nest Hub and the Home app.

Keep me posted.

Hi Dan, yes this is still an issue. To clarify, this is primarily a problem when accessing the thermostats from the Home App "thermostat" button.

Hi Edwar64896,

Thanks for the additional info. Aside from thermostat linked to your Home app, do you have other home automation devices that shows the same behavior?

Princess

No, it's only the devices under the "Thermostat" button on the front page of the "Home" app.
