Google Home invite won't accept email address

alibev

I have been  to add another person to my Google Home via the invite person option. I type in their email address and it says 'Invalid Recipient, please enter the email or name of a contact'. The email address is one letter followed by a dot then another letter followed by a dot then their name etc.  If I change the second letter  to any other letter it works!

I then tried a variety of different email addresses and I can recreate the problem. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

The other person must have a gmail account.

Sorted the problem. The email address I was trying to add was not a Gmail address, even though the user insisted that the address ended in gmail.com. I asked her to send me an email and you guessed it, it came from a different domain. What a waste of half a day. Thank you'll for the help.

The other person does have a Gmail account. I followed the link you suggested which clarifies how the dots are interpreted. However, by changing one letter of the email address before the @Gmail it won't work.

As an example I can add the following Gmail email address jhgrown but not jigrown and there are multiple other variations on the same theme.

@alibev

I don't know whether Google Nest checks to see if the email address is a valid existing gmail address, but if they do, then if "jigrown", or "j.i.grown" or "j.igrown" (etc.) is not already an existing gmail username, it would be rejected.

Beyond that, as just another Google Nest customer, I have no idea.

I did think of that but the response is so fast I doubt it is connecting to Google. In this case the address is a valid Gmail address. All very strange.

@alibev

he only other restrictions I can find are these:

"You can't invite anyone using a:

Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) account
Google Account for children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country)

A maximum of 6 people can share a home."
