Home app notifications

CarlInATX
Community Member

I have Google home app, Nest Hub (2nd Gen) and Nest Cam (battery) with power cable. Camera event notifications to my iPhone 12 work fine. I put the home app on my wife’s new iPhone 15 and she can see the camera’s live video and past events, but gets no activity notifications. All settings in Home app look good. Both phones on iOS 17.  I just discovered that the Home app doesn’t even appear in her iphone’s Settings/Notifications app list.

@CarlInATX

Is your wife logging onto the Google Home app on her phone with her gmail account (as a member of your Google Nest "household")?

It seems really odd that the Google Home app is installed on her phone, but does not appear on her phone's Settings/Notifications list. You could try deleting and reinstalling the Google Home app on her phone. You don't lose any settings when you do this; you just need to sign back into the Google Home app after reinstalling. Perhaps this will correct the missing entry under Settings/Notifications.

I deleted and reinstalled the home app, same results. Still not in settings/ notifications list. The home app requires I use the google account associated with the camera, otherwise it wants me to set up a new camera, scan its qr code, etc., which of course is not appropriate. So still stuck. I don’t know about nest “households”, but it sounds promising . Where do I find that?

@CarlInATX

The Google Home app does NOT require that you use the Google Account used to set up the camera.

What you do is go into the Google Home app, select Settings, and then click on the plus icon near the top to invite another family into your Google Nest "household". (They have to have a gmail account.). Once they accept the invitation, they then log into the Google Home app using THEIR gmail account, and they will see the shared Google Nest "home/structure".  (Note that all household members have full control of everything.)

Thanks for that. I have wife added to the Home. She can see the hub and camera as before. Unfortunately she still does not receive notifications about camera activity.

@CarlInATX

That's odd. Has she set up notifications for various camera events in the Google Home app? And are notifications turned on for the Google Home app under Settings | Notifications on her iPhone?  Beyond that, I don't know.

Yeah, settings in the home app on both phones match. The mystery, as stated in my original post, is that on her phone the home app doesn’t even appear in the apps list under settings/ notifications. i wish i could get a nest developer to comment on that! Thanks again for your effort to help me!

Hello everyone,

@CarlInATX, thanks for reaching out here in the Community. Try restarting your wife's phone and compare if you have the same version of iOS 17. Also, share a screenshot of your wife's app list.

Looking forward to your response.

I appreciate the help, MplsCustomer.

Regards,

Emerson

Thanks Emerson. In my troubleshooting and that which occurred with Google “support” her phone was restarted many times, and the Google Home app was reloaded a couple of times. Both our phones have been on the same (latest) version of iOS throughout this experience.  The Google “support” guy came up empty as well. As far as your request for a screenshot of the app list, are you talking about the list in the main settings screen or the one under settings/notifications or something else? It’s kind of a long list for a screenshot.  What specifically would you be looking for there?

@CarlInATX

Your wife's iPhone is missing this entry for "Google Home" even though the Google Home app is installed on her iPhone?

Hey CarlInATX,

I appreciate your update. Please share your case ID here so that we can take a look at what happened. Also, can you please provide the exact iOS version (17.x.x) of both iPhones? What was shared by MplsCustomer is right on the spot. Please double check that entry from your wife's phone.

Let us know your update.

I appreciate your response, MplsCustomer.

Best,
Emerson

I don’t know the case ID. After 30-45 minutes the call dropped. I just assumed the support rep got tired of chasing the problem. Since the very first thing he said on the call was to get my phone number. “In case we get disconnected,” but didn’t call back, that confirmed my suspicions. I didn’t try reconnecting with him.

iOS levels on both phones: 17.2.1.

Hi CarlInATX,

It looks like it's more of an Apple iPhone's issue. Have you tried performing the steps from the link shared above? You may also try reaching out with Apple support and ask for assistance about your concern.

Thanks,

Emerson

Yes, that is correct. I have uninstalled Home app and reinstalled it a couple of times. All functionality of the Home app seem to work, except event notifications.

@CarlInATX

This thread on the Apple forum from 2 years ago describes the same issue occurring on other apps, and suggests a solution that worked for those customers;

https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/92552

I reset location and privacy, then restarted the phone. Apps all caused iOS to ask permission to use location, etc, as predicted . Still no notifications from Google Home app.

@CarlInATX

You could try deleting the Google Home app, then shutting off the iPhone briefly so it reboots, and then reinstall the Google Home app. I don't' know if that will make a difference.

I really don't know what else to suggest.  (I'm just another Google Nest customer.) This does seem to be at least partially an Apple issue.

I found this posting from 2022 for the same problem but no solution, so it's happened to at least one other Google Home app customer:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/253547827?sortBy=best

Thank you so much for your efforts to help!

In case you're still getting the same issue after performing the steps shared above, we would recommend you to call Apple support and ask for steps that you can do to resolve it.
