Multiple / duplicate homes for same address with different devices

I have two properties (physical addresses) set up in both the Google Home and Nest apps, and I have problems with duplicates. I'm wondering what is the most straightforward way to resolve the duplicates.

In summary:

 Property Address AProperty Address B
Google Home App

1 home with 1 device (Nest therm)

AS EXPECTED

1 home with Google 4 wifi points

1 home with 2 Nest thermostats

EXPECTED: 1 home with 4 Google wifi points and 2 Nest Thermostats

Nest App

1 home with 1 Nest thermostat

1 home with 0 devices

EXPECTED: 1 home with 1 Nest thermostat

1 home with 2 Nest thermostats

AS EXPECTED (also would be OK if this one home showed the thermostats as well as the wifi points)

Background and more detail

For Property Address A, I have a Nest thermostat that I installed long before the Google Home app existed. After I merged my Nest account with Google (couple years ago?), I ended up with two homes in both Google Home and the Nest app for this property. One with the thermostat, and the other with no devices. In the Nest app, I tried to delete the home with no devices, and I got a message saying I needed to delete the home in the Google Home app instead. I did that, and it's now gone from Google Home but still shows up in the Nest app.

For Property Address B, I initially created the home in the Google Home app when I set up a Google Mesh wifi network. Then I tried to add two Nest thermostats that were already installed (by the previous owner). I was unable to do this through the Google Home app, so I used the Nest app and ended up with two homes for this property appearing in the Google Home app – one with the Mesh wifi and the other with the thermostats. In the Nest app, there's just one entry for this property, as expected.

What's the most straightforward and efficient way to resolve this?

Hey there,
Sorry for the late response, but I wanted to drop in here to help.

I understand that this can be confusing but I definitely wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Just wanted to double check to see if you were still needing help on this? If so, what troubleshooting steps have you tried?

Please let me know.

Best regards,
Garrett DS

Yes, some help would be great.

For Property A, I don't know what I can do. The duplicate is only in the Nest App, and when I try to delete it, I get a message telling me I need to go to the Google Home app to delete it. There *was* a duplicate showing in the Google Home app as well, but I was able to delete it. That didn't fix the problem in the Nest app. Honestly though, I'm not too concerned, because Google Home is the app I use primarily.

For Property B, I haven't done anything. Here's what I think will work, but I'm a little hesitant: In the Google Home app, I think I can delete the Google Wifi network from from its home, and then delete that home. Then I should be able to add the Google Wifi to the home that has the Nest thermostats. I'm hesitant because once I remove the Google Wifi network, there will be no network in the location at all. I don't know if the process will attempt to use the Nest thermostats as "assisting" devices for setting up the wifi network, and whether that will cause problems, since the thermostats will have had their current wifi network taken down. If I go ahead with this, is there anything special I need to do in removing the Google Wifi network? Do I need to restore them to their factory defaults or something?

Hey there,

Sorry to hear that you're still having this problem. In my experience from other users, deleting 1 household entirely is the best bet to help out your duplicate issue.
You can also delete both and or unlink the devices and relink them to see if that will help.

If you remove the wifi network, it will mess up the thermostats and you may have to go through the process of unlinking and relinking them back to the household again and re setting them up.

If you remove the network, there is nothing special that you have to do to get them working.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks. Could I migrate the Google network from one home to the other, using these instructions:

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9547597?hl=en

If not, then please tell me if this process sounds viable:

  1. Delete the home that has the Google Wifi network (thereby deleting the network and the 4 wifi point devices)
  2. Add the Google Wifi network to the home that has the nest thermostats

Is there any obstacle or issue you would anticipate?

I would consider doing it the other way around (deleting the home with the Nest thermostats), but the issue that worries me is I was not able to add the Nest thermostats to the home using the Google Home app. After scanning the QR codes on the thermostats, Google Home app responded as if it had read the QR codes, but then didn't do anything else. Nothing was added. So I ended up adding the Nest thermostats using the Nest app, which spawned a second home in the Google Home app.

Hey there,

The instructions you sent were only to migrate the Google wifi network to the Google Home app. Is that what you're wanting? If so, those would work.
If you're not looking to do that, the steps that you provided after that would work to switch the network over to another household.

I totally understand your concerns, please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,

Garrett DS
