Nest / Home / Family Ownership

Is there really no way to change the ownership within the nest app for the family?

Seems like poor design to me, I have spent MONTHS on tech support to try and change the owner from a joint family email to my main gmail account for ease. I have made a new home and managed to keep the old email out of it but every time I add a device the old email is the one who added it and owns it. Pretty sure it is because the old email is the nest family owner.

All this process has done is disconnect my devices multiple times, make two thermostats unusable because they will not gather home data anymore and even tech support can not get them connect, nor have answers - they just keep sending new ones that keep getting me to the same error screens.

I would LOVE to deactivate this old email and be done with it but I am afraid once I do all of my devices and home information will be lost and cannot be recovered without spending a ridiculous amount in new devices to start over. - any thoughts while I await tech support to not help me for another month?

No unfortunately. The only way to change the owner of a device is to factory reset it and set it up again with the account you want to be the owner.

I've done that and it still doesn't work, ive just accepted it at this point.

Hi WhitneySpecks,

Thanks for posting in the community!

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been having a difficult experience trying to transfer the ownership of your devices in the Nest app. Don't worry; I'm here to help! To begin, I need to verify a few details with you. Can you please help me answer the next questions?

  • What are the specific models of your Nest Thermostats?
  • Are there any other devices connected to your Nest account besides the two Thermostats mentioned?
  • After performing a factory reset on the Nest Thermostats, do you remove them from the Nest app before attempting to set them up with a new email account?
  • What are the domain names of your old and new email accounts?
  • What is the current battery level of your devices?
  • Are the Nest Thermostats connected to your Wi-Fi network?

In the meantime, if you have more questions for me, feel free to reply to this post. I'll be happy to assist further!

Best regards,

Nery.
