Nest Notifications Not Working Until Phone is Unlocked

ICULOOKN
Community Member

Hi everyone,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with Android version 13, OneUI version 5.1. I've had my Nest doorbell and several other cameras for a few years now on differnt phones (Galaxy S8, S10+, S21 Ultra) and haven't encountered this issue before. My camera notifications no longer work until the phone is unlocked. I've added the Nest app to the "Never Sleeping Apps", changed the battery setting for the app to "Unrestricted", cleared the cache, uninstalled and re-installed the app, turned my phone off for (30) minutes, made sure all ofthe notification settings are configured correctly (allowed), but I still cannot get it to trigger the notifications while the phone is locked. My "Lock Screen Notifications are enabled at the device and app level.  I've scoured the web and none of the suggestions seem to work. I've used the "DontKillMyApp" Benchmark app, but it doesn't provide any insight as to why it doesn't work when the phone is locked. Any ideas?

Yes, its been happening to me for about 3 months now with the Android Nest app on our Google Pixel 6, 7, and 7 Pros. Notifications for the Nest Hello and 1st Gen Nest Indoor Camera are no longer in real-time and will either push ~1 hour after if phone is idle or when phone is unlocked.

Same has been happening to me for the past few weeks. I have a Pixel 4a.

Same thing here.  My wife and I  have Samsung Galaxy S21 phones and the notification from the Nest app that the camera  has spotted someone is delayed significantly or does not come until the phone is unlocked.  This was never a problem with our phones until recently.

Apparently know one from Google are reading these posts or have come up with a resolve.

So goodbye Nest, and hello Ring.

Verify the power save mode is turned off in the Quick Button Screen. Swipe from the top right of the screen to access.

My wife and I are having the same issue.  S21 and S22 Ultra.  Just started recently. We've checked everything mentioned above and nothing has worked.

I'm seeing the same thing on my Pixel 6 for the past few weeks.  Driving me crazy.  Like the OP, I've tried all of the suggested fixes with no improvement.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out and sorry for the delay. Is the issue happening with push notifications or both email and push? Do you all receive push notifications on multiple devices? Also, are your mobile devices connected to a network?

Could you all try to connect the mobile device to another Wi-Fi or cellular network? Signing in to your account on another mobile device and triggering a notification to test might also help isolate this.

Regards,

Juni

Hi Juni,

These are happening for me with just push notifications (I do not do email notifications). I only receive the notifications on my phone (Pixel 6).  I have the same issue connected to multiple WiFi networks and home and away and also over cellular with no difference.  The notifications are just not waking up my phone.  The notifications seem to come through as soon as I pick up my phone and unlock it.  As others on this thread, I've tried removing and reinstalling the app and changing multiple settings around battery management etc... with no change.

Thanks

Clint

This is only on my pixel6 pro with push notifications. Wife's iPhone has no issues nor does her Apple watch.

Hi Juni,

Thanks for responding. This issue is happening for push notifications. My Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (AT&T) behaves the same when the phone is on a wifi network or just wireless. My push notifications will not alert until the phone is unlocked. I've messed with every power saving setting, cache, uninstalled/re-install the app, etc. but still no change.

For us, it is push notifications.  I do not have email enabled, but will enable them as a troubleshooting effort.  We have a Galaxy S21 and S22 Ultra.  Both are having the same issue.  It does not matter if we are on WiFi or cellular (Verizon).  We do not get the push notifications until we wake our phones.  I also have a iPhone 14 Pro Max that has no notification delay like the Android phones.  If I can't find a solution soon I may need to switch to another system.  This is not acceptable.

Same issue with Pixel 5. Started roughly 4-6 weeks ago? Have tried multiple power and notification setting changes. Happens on home wifi, on cellular, while out and about and on other others' wifi.

Wake up in the morning, unlock phone and "bing! Bing! Bing! Bing! Bing!" The Nest notifications from overnight all suddenly come through.

Real pain when expecting a delivery, as no one rings doorbells anymore. When can we expect another response from support?

Just came across this recommendation on Reddit: press and hold on Nest app > Info > Battery Settings > Unrestricted

Will update tomorrow to say if works or not.

Tried this a couple of weeks ago with no good results!

This worked for about a day and then stopped working. Setting is still unrestricted. Have tried WiFi (Google WiFi set up.) Have tried T-Mobile WiFi. Have tried cellular network. Have checked all settings in Google Home App, Nest App (prefer Nest app, as I get to review full history rather than just the snippets it deems important,) and Pixel 5 system and notifications. Have tried literally every suggestion mentioned / recommended in this thread. Like others, I came to the conclusion after a dozen+ years of supporting Google exclusively it was time to move on and purchased Arlo and Alexa during the Prime Day sales. You guys have ruined Nest, Google Music, Chat, etc.

Now to decide... Samsung phone and keep Android? Or take the plunge and move to Apple iPhone?

Just wanted to add my name to the list. Notification will not come through until phone is unlocked. Worked fine for years.

My Nest app is version 5.71.0.18 and was updated on 06/14/23.

Is there any way to rollback this update?

Also, is there a way to prevent the phone from locking in the first place?

With a handicapped family member, receiving real time notifications is a must.

I am no longer a Nest app user, but I also had this issue with another app.  What I did in addition to all of the above suggestions, that so far is working, was enable all settings under "Intelligent WiFi", and set "Lock Screen Notifications" to On.

To find these settings go to Settings and type them into the search bar, or Settings>Connections>Wi-Fi>then long press three dots in the upper right corner and select "Intelligent Wifi".  For the Lock Screen Notifications go to Settings>Notifications>Lock Screen Notifications.

FYI - I also have a Nest Protect. The notifications from that come through fine.

Same here in UK.
My wife has an S20FE, I've just changed from S21 Ultra to S23 Ultra & all are affected similarly.
We need a fix, it's simply not acceptable to not get these Notifications.
These are security features

Just to add I have 2 new Nest cameras that are of course not supported by the Nest App but rather they use the Google Home App.

Notifications from these cameras come through fine!

When is Google going to sort it all out & migrate everything properly into the Home App!!

Hi folks,

Have you had the chance to try the steps provided by Erin3 and Hrdknox? If not, try it and let us know the result by updating this thread.

Thanks,

Been there, done that. Changed Nest Hello and Android phone wi-fi networks, took phone off wi-fi, checked everything that's been mentioned in this thread and all the many others. Restarted all hardware. Checked wi-fi strength and speed (all "Good" or better). If I'm lucky notifications are only 8-10 minutes late, usually more like an hour. Sometime not at all.

Hi Juni,

I've tried the recommendations by both with no improvement!

I think we are at the point where we can acknowledge that the issue is not a setting in our phones...please fix what you broke in the nest app

Chuftey

Hi all,

For me the "Unrestricted battery" setting did the trick.

The irony that this setting is enforced by the Android operating system run & owned by Google is not lost!

Just need to get the Nest -> Home migration completed now.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Sorry all.

Bit too quick off the mark.

Still not coming through as should.

I'm having the same issue on my S22+. Used to receive push notifications from my Nest Hello door camera within seconds of someone approaching my door. Now I don't see them until I unlock my phone. This is very frustrating. Rather defeats the purpose of having a doorbell camera.

I've had this problem for months and nothing has worked. I'm using a Samsung S20+ and will not get any notifications from Nest until my phone has been unlocked. I keep battery saver on and I like it to stay that way. I have kept battery saver on since I got this phone but this only became an issue a few months ago.

Everything worked fine until a month or so ago. No settings or hardware were changed, BUT both the Home and Nest app were updated in early June (6/12  & 6/14).

Every possible fixed offered up has been tried to no avail. The ONLY thing I can't do to troubleshoot is roll back the updates.

36 years in IT tells me something about these updates stinks to high heaven, and that's something neither I or any end user can remedy.

Same issue here, pixel 7. This on top of increasingly pathetic motion vs person vs pet detection makes it feel like Google is intentionally gimping every nest device. New gen cameras on the home app work fine but my <1 year old nest hello 1 and my nest cam outdoor are next to useless. Never buying Google cameras again.

Same issue on the Samsung S23 ultra. This is also occurring for gmail; other apps seem to be timely. As soon as I open the phone the notifications come in for Nest and gmail. Notices are timely on an iPad. I have also tried the suggestions mentioned here without success. This seems to be an Android issue associated with these two apps, Nest and gmail, (Google Home seems to work fine) but Google does not seem to be concerned. I thought it might be a Samsung issue, but if Pixel devices are having the same issue that is likely not the case. Thought I would weigh in to let them know it may be more common than they think.

I've attempted all of the tricks mentioned in this chain and none work. I've switched from push notifications to email notifications. The email notifications arrive within a minute of the event. I have Google Fiber, Google Pixel phone, Google Fi, Nest Cameras, etc. Because this is about security and safety, it's time to reconsider Alphabet as a supplier and move to other companies; maybe Apple.

How many times do we need to say that we've tried "everything"?  Including specifically stating multiple times that it doesn't matter if it's WiFi or cellular, and that we've tested it on Apple devices and that Apple devices work just fine

Hi mtmann79,

Understood. Have you also tried connecting your Nest camera to another network?

I look forward to your response.

Best,
