Routines not executing and Nest says functions are not available

linu30

I have three RGB lights in a room and I created a routine to: Turn them on, set them to 100% and make one red, one green and one blue.

I can do all these steps manually through the Google Home app on my iPhone. But it’s a bit time consuming, since the lights are normally just white, so I figured a routine would do the trick.

But when I try to start the routine, everything’s just a mess. What usually happens is that they just turn on with whatever color and strength they previously had and does not change color. My Google Assistant then repeats, over and over, that “the lights don’t support that function”. Three error messages for every light which is the same amount as the number of instructions.

if I remove the color instructions, the same thing happen but I only get two error messages per light. Lights turn on, does not adjust. If I execute the routine again, they adjust but I still get all the error messages.

If I instruct it to only change colors, nothing happens, lights don’t even turn on, and I get error messages.

Of course the lights support being turned on, being set to 100% and changing color! I’m not sure how the routines work or how it tries to execute, but I’m not asking for anything spectacular here…

Hi linu30,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I wanted to follow up and see if I could be of any help. A few things: what is the make and model of  your lights? Do you have other lights linked to your Google Home that have the same function? If so, are they working fine? Is it a personal routine, ready-made routine or household routine?

You can delete the routine and create it again and see if this will make a difference.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Juni

The ones used are IKEA LED1923R5 RGB LED's connected to the IKEA TRÅDFRI GATEWAY integrated with the Google Home app.

To test, I just made a routine using a PHILIPS HUE RGB LED connected to a PHILIPS HUE BRIDGE with negative result. The light doesn't come on and as such, it doesn't adjust strength or change color... and the Nest tells me three times that the light does not support that feature.

Hi folks,

Thank you for the help Princess.

@linu30, thanks for trying the steps, have you tried controlling your lights using voice command? If so, is it working or is it experiencing the same thing? Also, is this a personal routine, ready-made routine or household routine?

Try to reboot your lights and your WiFi router to refresh the WiFi signal then try it again.

Looking forward for your response.

Regards,

Juni

I've tried both personal and household routines. Everything is rebooted. I can instruct the light to turn on and off, I can dim it, I can change color. It all works. But when combined in a routine for convenience, I just get error messages.

Worth mentioning: When I made the routine with 3 instructions (turn on, dim to 50%, red light), my Assistant just told me that the light doesn't support that function and random stuff happened. Sometimes nothing, sometimes the light turned on with white light at 100%.

However, if I make a new routine from scratch, only covering turning on and dimming, that works for the RGB light, no error messages. As it does for the rest of the house in other routines aswell. That doesn't really help me since I want it to change color.

Also, if I try to make a new routine that only switches an already lit light to red, that doesn't work either. As soon as I try to incorporate switching color, I get error messages. For both Philips and IKEA RGB.

If I make a routine that also includes other lights doing simple stuff such as turning on, those instructions work. It is only switching the color of the RGB light that causes error messages. And again, switching colors works in the Home app if I change it outside of a routine.

Hi linu30,

I just wanted to confirm if the behavior is still the same even after you've done some steps?

Dan

It doesn't matter if I try to trigger the routine via voice command or the app - the routine doesn't carry out the complex instructions, it only turns the lights on and then spam me with error messages.

If I set the routine to start on a specific time, the same thing happens, only the Assistant doesn't talk to me, I just get a warning notification in my phone that something isn't working properly.

  • Rebooting doesn't help.
  • Changing routine type between household or personal doesn't help.
  • Triggering via app, time or voice command makes no difference.
  • Same issue with multiple brands of lights and hubs.

Hi linu30,

Apologies for the late reply. I wanted to check the status of your concern? Is the behavior the same? Also, since you tried to make the routine with 3 instructions (turn on, dim to 50%, red light), which in this case it responded that the light doesn't support that function especially with the color change ― it would really help us a lot to isolate this when you contact RGB support team to see if they can confirm that the color change is not applicable with Google Home.

  • Note: the partner themselves manages the URL portal used to link partners in the Google Home app. Issues encountered when linking a partner (home control) should be directed to that home automation partner for support. Partners are expected to support the integration of their products with Google Nest and Home devices.

Keep us posted.

Dan
