Sony Android TV (X9000F) cannot be added to home in Google Home app, but appears as Local Devices

My Sony Android TV 55 X9000F is listed under "Local devices" in the Google Home app but I can't seem to be able to add it to home and set up the device.

I've tried the following to fix this:

  • Reinstalled the Google Home app: Removed and reinstalled the app on my phone.
  • Factory reset my TV: Performed a factory reset on the TV.
  • Checked for updates: Ensured both the Google Home app and TV software are up-to-date.
  • Same Network: Ensured both the Google Home app and TV software are connected to the same wifi network.
  • Tried re-adding the TV: Attempted to add the TV as a new device, but encounter a loop in the setup process, where “local device” can’t be found.
    • Add device
    • New device
    • Choose home
    • Looking for devices - "what are you setting up with"
    • Choose chromecast/google tv and plug in your device show
    • Exits and restarts the loop at  - Looking for devices - "what are you setting up with"

It seems like the Google Home app can see the TV, but can't properly connect to it for full functionality.

Expected behavior: I should be able to fully control my Android TV through the Google Home app, including powering it on/off, changing channels, and using other features as well as triggering voice activated commands such as “OK Google…turn on TV”

Current behavior: The TV is stuck in "Local devices" with limited functionality and not recognized by any of my Google Home devices

I have filled out the form suggested in other forums with all the needed information.

Please help me resolve this issue so I can use the Google Home to control my TV.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for following up. After a handful of factory resets and toggling between 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz, I was able to access the settings button and add the device to my Google home.

Really appreciate your help!

Hi andyv1,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry that you're having trouble setting up your Sony Android TV on the Google Home app. I understand how frustrating this can be. I'm here to help.

Before I begin, I need to ask a few questions for further assistance:

  • When the TV is appearing on local devices, can you select a room to add the device?
  • Do you have any other streaming devices (e.g., Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV)? If so, does the same issue happen on those devices?
  • Does your television have the matter system?

For your concern, please try the below steps:

  • Add device
  • Matter-enabled device
  • Choose your home
  • Find the device.
  • Finish the setup

You need to search for your device in Matter devices because if you search for it in Google Nest or Works with Google, you won't be able to find it. Chromecast and Google TV are only for devices with the Google TV system.

Let me know how it goes and keep me posted.

Regards,

Kevin
