Stuck in Nest Account Migration Paradox

john_t_22

I have Nest smoke detectors that I installed years ago and had paired that Nest account with my Google G Suite Business account at the time. I also have a personal Gmail account. In trying to set up a new Nest Thermostat, I was asked to "migrate" my old Nest account.

However, I am not able to migrate my Nest account to join with my G Suite account. Apparently this is impossible.

I am also apparently unable to "unpair" my old Nest account from the previous pairing with my G Suite account. My only option seems to be to create a new Gmail account (or use my personal Gmail) and set up my entire Nest system from scratch. That means taking down 12 smoke detectors and going through that entire process to set them up again. I had already done this punishing exercise twice when I had changed my Wi-Fi login one time.

Am I missing something here? Should it be this difficult to  combine new and old Nest devices under one Gmail account?

That is a very good question, one that tens of thousands of paying google G-suite users, loyal google users want to know. What is the big secret Google? Why can't we migrate Nest to G-Suite? GarrettDS a "Community Specialist" shut down a conversation asking that very same question in October of 2021. Hay Google, Why can't we?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for posting and sorry for the delay.

You cannot use your GSuite accounts in your personal Google Home apps as these emails are monitored by your employers and needs admin permissions to be used externally. You can check this link for more details.

Best,

Mel

I thought I had sent a reply earlier, but it must not have gone through. The problem here is that GSuite accounts were indeed allowed to be associated with Nest accounts previously, which is what I had done when I set up all my Nest smoke detectors a few years ago. I understand that this is no longer allowed. However, I am also not allowed to re-associate my existing nest account with a personal Gmail account. Apaprently, I have to start from a blank slate with a completely new Nest account and set up all my smoke detectors from scratch to work with that new Nest account. All I am trying to do is simply add a Nest thermostat to my existing Nest set-up, yet I can't do it. Why did Google not provide a "way out" for people in my situation?

Hi john_t_22,

I understand that this is  not the most convenient answer you're  looking for, but you will need to factory reset your devices setup on your Nest App and create a new Google account (non-GSuite) to use to sign in your Home app. After that, set up your devices on the Home app.

Mel

OK - just confirming that that was my only option. The unfortunate thing here is that we are talking about 12 smoke detectors that I will have take down, factory reset each one, set them up one by one, tag them based on location and re-install each one. It's a major pain in the neck for the consumer. It's really unfortunate that someone at Google hasn't thought this through to make the transition easier for consumers in my situation.
