Why is Google now using YouTube instead of sending a text message to one's cell phone with a verification code when signing onto this Google Nest Community on a mobile device? There is no mention anywhere on my Google account about using YouTube for 2-step verification.
On the Google Account Help forum, a question was posted about this in January 2022, but was unanswered and locked: https://support.google.com/accounts/thread/145719755/2-step-verification-is-asking-me-to-use-youtube...
In searching via Google, there seems to be no information whatsoever on this.
And why does Google identify an iPad as a "Mac device" after this verification is performed?

Hey everyone,
Thanks all for your patience on this post, and sorry for the confusion. I originally pinned a response by @knewland397 as a helpful workaround for some folks on the thread, but I understand that it didn’t answer the whole question. Happy to shed some light on the situation here!
Prompts like this are intended to be easier than entering a verification code to log in, and you can receive them from not only the Youtube app, but the Gmail app, Google Photos app, and more. To learn more about prompts and how they help keep your account safe, stop by our Help Center.
To answer your question of why your Nest Community account is impacted, our community uses the same Google Account authentication as the rest of Google services.
For future reference, our friends over at the Google Account Help Community are best equipped to help you with these types of questions. This forum is meant to host discussion about apps and accounts as they relate to Google Home and Nest.
Hope this helps!
Best,
James

Hi. Just like the previous post above, I do not have Google nest either, and having the same problem. This thread popped up first while trying to look up a solution. I am trying to download more apps on my smart tv, and the Google play app store asked me to log in and do the same. No code pops at all in YouTube. I researched this more, and apparently Google has implemented this feature for security, they announced automatically enrolling, even if you didn’t set it up. The problem is, the security check is linked to users with YouTube channels. YouTube requires a Google account and for some reason the two are cross linked together I feel. I didn’t find any options in my YouTube settings about 2step verification. Google should have notified their email account users better, and added the option of YouTube, so you can at least deselect it properly. I’m not necessarily a content creator on YouTube, just have an account so I can build a history and watch other YouTube videos. Seems like this was a huge miss on their part to bridge the two properly, or at least add the options correctly so you can have a choice.

I would also love to get a fix for this.
It gmail forces me to use my youtube app, but then it just spins and spins. I cannot log into my gmail from another computer

Exactly the same problem. Moreover, it insist that I open the You Tube app on devices I no longer own! As far as I can tell there is NO WAY to tell any google-related apps or accounts that I no longer own these devices and NO WAY to stop the ridiculous prompts to open You Tube to verify accounts on gmail, YouTube TV, and other apps.

I Completely agree.
we need it for work to use gmail ad it doesn't let us sign in as it says via YouTube on a certain phone, when you go on this there's no prompt or nothing and our 2 step verification has been turned off the entire time although or recovery number and email is on there yet they still don't use it!

This feature sucks! I logged out of all google apps on my phone so this doesn’t happen and it’s still asking me to go to YouTube. Send a f*ing text 🙄
