Do I have to have a gmail email account to migrate the nest app with google home?  I use the same yahoo.com email for both apps right now.

@prmcpa

I'm a bit confused by your post.

You need a Google Account (gmail) to use the Google Home app (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7035987).

When you migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account, you are by definition migrating to a Google Account (gmail). Here's a Google Nest Help topic on migration issues:

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9297676

Once you migrate, you then log onto the Google Nest app with your Google Account (gmail).

I'm not sure how, but I am logged in the Google Home app on my iphone and ipad using a yahoo email account.  I don't have a gmail account and I have several cameras, thermastats and light switches I control using the Google Home app.

I think you have have a google account using any email address you want.

@prmcpa

I don't know, then. I thought you needed a gmail account to use the Google Home app. I also thought that additional "household" members of a Google Nest "household" had to have a gmail account. But maybe it's because invites fail when people are sending invites to non-gmail accounts that are not Google Accounts.

There is this thread from last year, which leads to a link saying you can have a Google Account with a non-gmail account:

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Apps-Account/Google-home-invite/m-p/240264

I don't know where that leaves you with your migration question. It does seem, based on the "FAQs about accounts for the Nest app" topic I linked to above (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9297676), that you cannot migrate to a Google Account that is already linked to a Nest Account.

Perhaps Google Nest Support should clarify.

Thanks for the help.  I hope Google support does clarify.  I have not yet linked my Google Home account and Nest Account (as far as I know).  I use each app separately for now to look at different cameras, etc.  What I see in one app, I don't see in the other app.

@prmcpa

You might want to contact Support for advice on how to proceed, using the link and instructions in this post:

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Cameras-and-Doorbells/Using-Google-Nest-s-quot-Contact-Us-quo...

A couple of observations:

You'll want to review the migration information in the link I provided above.

Since you are already using your Google Account (with the Yahoo credentials) to administer Google Nest devices in the Google Home app, that Google Account is already linked to a Nest Account, and therefore you cannot migrate to that Google Account.

These are Google Nest's instructions for how to proceed in that case:

Use the Google Account that's linked to another Nest Account.

1. Sign into the Nest app with your Nest Account.
2. Disconnect all your devices.
3. Sign out of the Nest app.
4. Select Sign in with Google sign in with the linked Google Account.
5. Reconnect your devices.

https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9297676#zippy=%2Cerror-message-google-account-is-alread...

What's unusual about your case is that you are already using the same non-gmail credentials in both the Google Nest app and in the Google Home app.

Perhaps you can a) disconnect all your devices, b) sign out of the Google Nest app, and then c) select "Sign in with Google" and use your same Yahoo credentials for "Sign in with Google" to sign back into the Google Nest app, and then d) reconnect all of your devices in the Google Nest app.

I just don't know if you can do "c", since you'll be reusing the same Yahoo credentials (because they're what you use for your Google Account).

Hi folks,

Thanks for the help here, MplsCustomer.

prmcpa, I hope you've got the answer you're looking for. If you're still in need of assistance, please let us know, as we would be happy to answer any questions you may have.

@Juni

Could you or someone at Google Nest please provide some guidance for @prmcpa  in their situation? They currently sign onto the Google Nest app with their Yahoo email credentials. They also sign onto the Google Home app with their Google Account, which uses those same Yahoo email credentials. How should they migrate their Nest Account so they can get all of their devices in the same Google Nest "home/structure"? Can they do what I suggested?

Yes.  I still need help.  Please see @MplsCustomer post above.  It understands the issue.

@Juni   I still need help!

I currently sign onto the Google Nest app with their Yahoo email credentials. They also sign onto the Google Home app with their Google Account, which uses those same Yahoo email credentials. How should they migrate their Nest Account so they can get all of their devices in the same Google Nest "home/structure"?

Can I :

a) disconnect all your devices,

b) sign out of the Google Nest app, and then

c) select "Sign in with Google" and use your same Yahoo credentials for "Sign in with Google" to sign back into the Google Nest app, and then d) reconnect all of your devices in the Google Nest app.

Will this work????

Hi prmcpa,

Thanks for posting in our Community. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with this.

You’ve got it right. Just follow the recommended steps above. Keep in mind that when you disconnect the Nest devices from the Nest app, you will lose all data.

If you need to, follow the steps here to Save and download video clips.

You’ll also need to reset the Nest camera or doorbell before adding it to the Google account.

Let me know how it goes.

I appreciate your help, Juni, and MplsCustomer.

Best,

Lance

@Lance_L   Will the above work with a Nest 1st gen (not 2nd gen)?

@Lance_L  @MplsCustomer
How do I see my Nest Cam 1st gen in Google Home app????  I have three 1st gen cams I want to move from Nest app to Google Home app.   Is this possible yet?..

@prmcpa

There is as yet no facility to "move" our older cameras and doorbells from the Google Nest app to the Google Home app. Migrating from a Nest Account to a Google Account (or the workaround above) will simply make your older cameras and doorbells visible in the Google Home app, but most of the administration of those older cameras and doorbells will still be done in the Google Nest app.  And they will still be accessible on the home.nest.com website.

Ok.  I am going to remove my cams from my nest account (that is connected to my yahoo email address) and add them to a new nest account using my new gmail account.  My Home app is now tied to that new gmail account.  Then I will migrate the nest app to the home app.  I am ok administering them in the nest app for now as long as I can also see them in home app.  I will continue to use the Nest app as long as my two Dropcam Pro cameras continue to work.

@MplsCustomer @Lance_L

I added all of my cameras (two Dropcam Pro, three Nest Cam 1st gens and 1st Gen Doorbell wired) to my new Nest account that is under my new gmail account (that is also linked to my Google Home app).   I didn't even have to migrate, the cameras now appear in Google Home app.   One problem, the doorbell camera "can't be reached" about 70% of the time I am in the Home app (even though it is always visible in the Nest app).

Is there something I need to do different with the doorbell camera?

Thanks for the help.

Hello prmcpa,

I appreciate you getting back to me with updates on your issue. Let’s try the additional steps below:

  • Open your iPhone's Settings > General > Date and Time. Tap Set Automatically, toggle it off, and then turn it back on. Make sure that the timezone, date, and time are correct.
  • Go back to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Google Home. Make sure the Google Home app has permission to use the phone's location.
  • Check for any updates for the Google Home app in the Apple App Store.
  • Check for any iOS updates.
  • Uninstall the Google Home app, restart your iPhone, and then reinstall the Google Home app.

Keep me posted.

Thanks for chiming in, MplsCustomer.

Regards,

Lance

I didn't do anything else.  The doorbell camera works fine now.  All is good so far.  Thanks for the help.
