I signed up for Nest Aware after someone damaged our front door, but now I cannot access any footage prior to signing up.

Video history begins to be retained on Google Nest's servers starting at the time you purchase a Nest Aware subscription. Until then, Google Nest does not have our permission to start saving our video history.

You would have had to be enrolled in the Nest Aware at the time of the event with the Nest Hello doorbell. Unfortunately, without the subscription there isn't any saved footage. Google doesn't save footage other than the 3 hour window to view past events for the newer cameras.
