Automatic on/off issue with Nest cam indoor (wired, 3rd gen)

Hello,

I replaced my Nest cam 2nd gen by a Nest cam 3rd gen. I added this new camera to the 'Home' and 'Away' routines, but it doesn’t turn on or off automatically. I have to do it manually through the Home app. My location is detected correctly, the mode changes properly depending on whether I’m home or away, and the routines run as expected. I have a second camera included in these routines, and it turns on and off correctly. Do you have any idea what might be wrong with the Nest cam 3rd gen?

Thanks.

Hi @Skydante,

Thank you for replying and for the information requested.

Please check whether the camera is set to respond to the Home & Away changes in the Google Home app by following the steps below:

  1. Open the Google Home app:
  2. Tap Automations.
  3. Tap Home or Away.
  4. Check if the device is listed under Actions.
  5. If the device isn't listed under Actions:
    • Tap Add action, then tap the check box next to the device name.
    • Tap Next, then enable the toggle for the device to respond to Home & Away.
    • Tap Add Action and then Save.

If the issue persists, force close the app and reopen it, and then change the settings again.

If the issue is related to the Google Home app, clear the cache of the app on your phone and then restart your phone.

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Anders

Hmmmm, how odd.  If no one chimes in here on this user forum you may want to reach out and speak to a Google tech person.  Or maybe try the REDIT site.

You can open an official support ticket here and it will give you the chance to speak to someone in Google by chat or a phone call.  If you get the answer to this please return and let us know what the problem was.

Hi @Skydante,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand you're having an issue with your Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) not automatically turning on and off with the Home & Away feature, even though your other camera works correctly. I appreciate you letting me know that location is detected correctly, and the mode changes properly depending on whether you're home or awayI'm happy to assist you.

To better understand the cause of the issue, please provide the information requested below:

  • Is your Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) working properly aside from the Home & Away issue?
  • Is the camera set up in the same home structure as your second camera that uses the Home & Away mode?
  • Are you getting a specific error message when Home & Away mode fails?

In the meantime, I recommend you visit the article How Nest cameras automatically switch to Home or Away, where you can find detailed information about the feature, along with some tips and troubleshooting steps.

Please keep me posted.

Regards,

Anders

  • Yes, the camera works perfectly
  • Yes, the camera is set up the same home and the same routine as the other camera (which turns on and off automatically)
