Cameras are flashing in Nest App

gypsyman
Community Member

Starting about a week ago, my cameras seem to flash every few minutes. This flash only occurs in the Nest app and only on the home screen. When I click on any one of the cameras it never seems to flash. When I watch the flash carefully it seems as though it is flashing the view from one camera over top of another camera randomly. I have 3 cameras operating and it is happening to all of them. Again this is only in the Nest app on my browser, and it happens in both Edge and Chrome, but just started happening about a week ago. I have called Nest about it, but after twice talking to someone who I could barely understand and sending them a video of the floashing, I am hoping someone else has had the problem and may be able to help me solve it. It is very annoying as I look at my Nest app and it flashes all the time.

Oh sorry, I got confused as you said in your first sentence it is happening in your NEST APP.  But there isn't a Nest app for a laptop.

It does sound like a browser issue or some plug-in that might be causing the problem.   I'm on a Mac running safari and it is working great.   Also, can you try it on another family member's computer and see if it still does it?  It might be worth trying Firefox just as a test as well to help narrow it down.

I see one other person on this forum reported something very similar this year but I don't know if they solved it or now.  Here is the link if you want to read it.

I guess this should be closed. Nothing is making it work correctly in Chrome or Edge. But it seems to be working in FIrefox.

@gypsyman

So this is happening on the home.nest.com website, right? We have not yet seen this with Firefox on an iMac.

Hmmmm, how odd.  Maybe try powering down all 3 cameras for about 60 seconds and bring them back up and see if the problem goes away.    Or maybe (as a test) power back up only (1) camera at first and see if you still get the flashing.

The fact that it is happening on both the Nest App on your phone and in your browser seems to indicate it is a problem at the NEST server side of things.

No it is odd that it doesn't seem to be happening on the Nest app on my phone, only seems to be happening on a laptop using either Chrome or Edge browsers.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your help here, EmptyNester.

I want to check if you still need help. Don't hesitate to reach back if you do.

Thanks,

JT

Problem has not been solved. Browser view is still flasjing randomly. As I stated it started a couple weeks ago and has continued. I have even swapped out monitors and cables as someone stated it could be a refresh rate problem on my monitors. Doesn't happen on the app, doesn't happen on a view where I only have one camera showing, but it is real distracting when looking at the view of all cameras.

Did you try it on another computer to see if the flashing problem happens there?  The idea here would be to determine if it is a problem specific to that one computer or not.  There is also a chance this will self-correct as soon as there is another Windows update or browser update or something like that.

I have tried it on different computers, but I did figure out that it doesd not seem to be happening in FireFox. I have only had it open in FireFox for about an hour or so but it does seem to be stable there.

Hi folks,

I appreciate your help, EmptyNester.

We appreciate your efforts here. Try to clear your Chrome browser cache & cookies.

Here's how:

  1. On your computer, open Chrome .
  2. At the top right, click More.
  3. Click More tools > Clear browsing data.
  4. At the top, choose a time range. To delete everything, select All time.
  5. Next to "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files," check the boxes.
  6. Click Clear data.

Let us know if that works.

Regards,

JT

Nope, that did not work. It seems the only fix I can find using Windows 11 is to use the FireFox browser. ALthough I will admit that I am not sure if it is something unique to my laptop or not as I do not have multiple laptops to try it on.

Hey there,

Checking back in — how's it going with your Nest cameras? Still need our help?

JT

Only if someone knows how to get the flashing to stoip in Chrome or Edge. Firefox is working, but I am not a fan of that browser normally.

@gypsyman

It may be specific to your laptop or plugin with your browser. I would suggest following all the previous troubleshooting steps again, and if the issue persists, please try to access on a different device like your phone in the Nest app, or on another family member's laptop or computer possible. It sounds like it may be device-specific with your laptop or browser.

Best regards,

Brad

The problem still exists, but I don't see any way of actually geting help. It seems as though the problem only happens when using the Chrome browsewr of the Edge browser. SO I am stuck with using Firefox, even though I don't like that browser, or sticking to only using my phone to view.

Hey gypsyman,

I understand. Let's try to disable add-ons on your Chrome browser. Follow the steps below and let us know how it goes.

  1. In the upper-right corner of the Chrome window, click the Menu icon and then select Settings.
  2. Select the Extensions link in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  3. Any extensions that have a check mark are enabled.
  4. Disable any add-ons that are enabled.
  5. Close the browser (use the keyboard shortcut Alt + F4), and relaunch it.

Thanks,

Archie
