Chime compatibility with upgraded transformer

Toopack
Community Member

Should i change 20 yr old chime now that i changed transformer from a 15VA to a 24V 20VA?
Am I correct in being cautious that my old chime can’t handle the new 24V 20VA power?

*What does chime connector do? Is it a transformer too? I just dont understand why its needed

Hello Toopack,

Thanks for posting here in the Community. If you are going to install Nest Doorbell wired, the required voltage for that is 16 to 24 V AC with power of 10 to 40 VA. The purpose of the chime connector is to allow the chime's wires to deliver constant power to the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) and Nest Doorbell (wired) and protect your chime from damage. In addition, without the chime connector, you might experience chime buzzing or unexpected chimes.

Check out this link to learn more about Nest doorbell compatibility.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Best,
Edmond
